Losing streak snapped at 14 (2048-26)

Record lows at the gates

Twice in the Baghdad & Tripoli homestand the crowd sunk below the 10,000 mark for the first time this season, but there was another, better, landmark too as in the final game of the week the all-time total attendance though the gates of The People’s Palace passed the 4,000,000 mark. Despite the falling crowds, the race is on now with 24 home games left to see if the Red Crescents can set a new all-time high for single season attendance, they are currently around 409,000 short of the record high of 1,596,572. It’s a record they could actually break, needing an average of around 17,000 the rest of the way to achieve the record. It’ll be close with the average attendance now almost dipping below 20,000, but it’s something to aim for.

Meanwhile on the field we can be thankful to BANC bottom side Tripoli for allowing us to snap our record losing streak at 14, five more than our previous streak of nine consecutive losses. A 7-3 win at the People’s Palace over the Piranhas snapped the streak and we followed it up with an 8-3 win the next day. That was watched by just 9,157 hardy souls, our lowest attendance of the season. Looking at our remaining fixtures in August, I have severe doubts that we can even equal July’s miserable tally of six wins. To find four more wins could be tough.

It's not hard to see that everyone is to blame, when your rotation is all giving up around a six ERA despite trying to limit them all to 80 pitches so they won’t run into late trouble and the majority of batters are struggling to maintain an average of hitting the ball just once in four time, you can see there’s not much hope of success. You can also look up and down the franchise levels and see precious little that will improve that situation any time soon. A few young bright lights, but as we all know a bit of shiny garnish on top doesn’t make a rotten meal any better. Still we’ve got to press on, we have to believe one day it will get better, Cairo are a shining example of that, but they have a good GM we don’t.
