ST: Games 9-16

Another eight games in the ST book, another game of musical chairs at the end of it. A good set of games, no-one got injured again and no-one got lit up, although we did fail to score twice. The regulars got a few more AB’s and now they’ll move into the intensive phase as we hit the final eight games of 2048 spring training.

Burt Davies, now 22-yrs-old, headed back to Port Elizabeth once more without showing any real improvement in his hitting, he’s a terrific fielder at short but just can’t hit the ball if you tossed it underarm to him. Maybe one day his glove will get him a regular big league spot, but this ain’t the day. 31-yr-old Mike Schofield sees the end of his career coming as he’s sent to Port Elizabeth to play backup to any up & coming backstop and Chris Glass won’t be far behind him. He’s only kept for depth in the final stanza as Riyadh announce that Diesel “All-Star” Dave and Pablo Espinoza will be behind the plate for the 2048 Red Crescents. Espinoza was almost as bad as Schofield last year, but at least he has a few extra years on his side.

26-yr-old minor league FA signing Fernando Figueroa slips all the way down to Double-A Santiago where we have a vacancy for a competent CF. Jose Tovar let down by less than stellar defence and 2047’s batting average of .207 heads for the Windies too despite his 73 UMEBA games last year. Cam Woods, denied a UMEBA cup of coffee last year by administrative foul ups, got his look this spring, but Grady Fern is now fit again and Woods didn’t show anything to take his place.

Although nothing has been announced, it looks like the outfield log jam has been solved. The line-up for these final eight games is, from left to right, Juan Martinez, Jose Leyva and Mike Martin with Torvald van Donkelaar & Rule 5 pick Vinnie Coalman on the bench. The DH is a lock by the other Rule 5 selection, Umar Mutemi, who has hit two homers & 10 RBI with a .983 OPS.

28-yr-old Nick Garner who signed last August as a minor league FA and promptly tore his rotator cuff has been healthy all spring and remains in camp until the end but it still could be anyone’s names going up on that rotation. One thing is that it’s looking less and less likely that it will include Juan Rodriguez, in his three spring starts, in 12 IP, he has given up 13 hits, 12 runs, six walks and four homers. Coupled with 19 losses in 2047 and an $11m price tag this year, he’s pitching himself into a “Bancroft Release”.
