Spring Training: Positional Battles (2048-9)
ST: Position Battles
The lack of signings doesn’t give rise to many battles for the starting roles, but one that really sticks out is the battle for the role behind the plate. It’s not just a battle for the starting role, more a battle for a roster spot as Riyadh have four catchers on the spring training roster. The starting role is probably “Bancroft Boy” Diesel “All-Star” Dave’s to lose, but behind him? The Red Crescents would really prefer the up & coming Chris Glass to be back up but his record is patchy to say the least. Trouble is last year’s duo Mike Schofield
& Pablo Espinoza were probably as bad as Glass is shaping up to be?
The double-play combo of Grady Fern and Jose Montano appear to have pretty much got the middle infield roles locked up as has Jamie Ramirez at the hot corner, but there does seem to be a lack of confirmed backups anywhere around. The current thinking is that the Red Crescents will probably wait until 2049 for long term replacements, around $20-25 million of cap space will be available then and the farm is looking fairly bereft of players in these positions to promote. Freddy McCord who was at least a warm body if not much else to fill those backup spots has unfortunately finally retired.
The 1B/DH roles are well catered for, star player Masaki Sato, improving at first base, will probably stay there while 23-yr-old Rule 5 pick Umar Mutemi from Jerusalem looks to be in pole position for the DH role. Riyadh have a couple of other good candidates in camp trying to force themselves into the picture and they still have to find a role for Clive Timberlake who had a pretty decent 2047.
In the outfield it is open season, there are a lot of players in camp with a good chance of earning either one of the three starting jobs or the two backup roles. The real trouble is most can either bat or field, very few in camp can do both. It is a conundrum that Riyadh will have less than a month to sort out. 21-yr-old Ivan Gulledge might be looking at a backup role at the very best, but his overall play is certainly improving and he may be coming into Spring Camp 2049 with a swagger.
