Introducing the Charity Boys

Among the 60 players in Spring Training camp will be the three players generously donated apparently by the British charity ”Help for distressed UMEBA Expansion Teams” which I’ve since found out, following a little digging, is the European front for Barney Bancroft’s operations. The three players are so good that they will definitely be in the top 10 Riyadh stars for some time. These are the three and their potted history, all of them have UMEBA experience already

31-yr-old Catcher Diesel “All-Star” Dave Dave was the 27th overall pick in the 2034 first-year player draft by the Las Vegas Hustlers (Fun Fact: his 2034 signing fee was $300k more than he will earn from Riyadh this season, although rumours have it that all three players are being heavily subsidised by Bancroft). He never got to play in Las Vegas though as he was traded to the Huntsville Phantoms the next year. He made his BBA debut for Huntsville in 2039, the final season before they relocated to Chicago and became the newest incarnation of the Chicago Black Sox. In six years with the franchise he made 533 appearances, hitting 148 home runs and made his only BBA All Star appearance in 2044. Dave left Chicago at the end of the year and signed a 3-year deal with Omaha. Despite hitting 46 more homers and driving in 95 runs he also breached the 200 strikeout barrier (203) for the first time in his career as his batting average was just .207. That proved to be his only year with the Cyclones as he left and signed a 2-year deal to make his UMEBA debut with the Cairo Pharaohs. At the end of 2047 his demands were too much for Cairo and it was looking as though he would have remained unsigned until Bancroft added him to his Expansion bail-out plan.

28-year-old OF Jose Leyva . Jose signed as a 16-year-old international free agent out of Spain with the then California Crusaders with a $18.6m signing bonus and was straight away installed as the BBA’s #17 prospect. After picking up a Spike Nolan League Championship ring that season, the Crusaders shipped him off to New Orleans. In 2040 he added a Rupert Horn Memorial League Championship ring before making his BBA bow. He spent the next four years making a name for himself as a solid defensive outfielder who was lacking somewhat with the bat. In 2045 he spent most of the year in Triple-A, making just nine BBA appearances, before being non-tendered at the end of the season. Athens picked him up for 2046 on a 2-year deal and he finally swung the bat for a .302 average while recording a 3.3 WAR. He fell to a negative WAR though in his second year and his contract wasn’t extended.

30-year-old P Jose Lima . Jose’s professional career started in 2035 when he was drafted in the middle of the second round of the first-year player draft by Seattle Storm. Or it should have, but he failed to sign and instead was drafted again in 2036 by San Fernando towards the end of the fifth round. His run through the BBA franchises continued when he was traded to New Orleans and then onto the Omaha Hawks where he played his first BBA games in 2039 at the age of 22. In seven years there he made 209 appearances (157 starts) posting a 63-61 record with four saves. In 2046 he made the move over to the UMEBA, signing a two year deal with Mumbai. There he helped them to two United Cup wins, posting a 30-14 record in 64 starts before leaving at the end of his deal.

All three will be expected to play major parts this year in reviving the Red Crescents; with the really disappointing performance by the Riyadh catchers in 2047 “All Star” Dave will be expecting to play the majority of games in 2048 behind the plate while Lima will undoubtedly be the ace of the rotation. Leyva will have to keep up his newfound bat skills though as Riyadh has a couple more decent defensive centre fielders in camp. It could be that he needs to flash the bat as well as the leather to secure the starting CF job in 2048.

Dave's demands weren't too much. They would have been had he made any. Rather, he chose free agency.
Good luck with him.

Interest Diesel trivia:
1) He strikes out more than he reaches base (1404 Ks to 955 on-base)
2) 31% of his hits are HRs.

I think you came out better than me.
I got a couple of 36 year olds.
They won't last that long.
The other guy was good though.
