A Battle in China (2046-33)

A real battle for the Wildcard

As we approach the final six games of the Chinese Baseball Association it’s obvious that Tianjin are the class of the league and have already won the regular season pennant, but behind them there’s a real battle royale for that one wildcard spot with five teams all within two games of each other. Entering the last two regular series our Chinese Taipei are a game ahead of the chasing pack but are not favourites to chinch the prize.

It comes down to the remaining schedule and the team with the best remaining fixtures are the Changchun Chippers who currently sit fifth out of the bunch of five. Their last two series are against Shenyang & Danshui, the bottom two sides in the league with only 31 wins this season between them. We should give them a run for the spot though as our last two series are against Wuhan & Taiwan, both these sides are probably sitting outside the Wildcard race, but only just. They are far more dangerous than the bottom two sides. The three remaining sides in the Wildcard Race, Hongkong, Chongqing and Yinchuan, will have a near impossible task as they all face off amongst each other and Yinchuan even finishes the season with three games against the mighty Tianjin.

Things of course don’t always go as planned in Baseball or indeed any other sport, but it will be an interesting last week. For our preparations we have made a few special plans to hopefully improve our chances and we have switched to a four-man rotation after going with a six-man rotation all season. We hope to come out on top, but know the odds are stacked against us. Changchun could well go 6-0 in their two series meaning we would have to go at least 5-1 to definitely clinch the Wild Card. No matter what we do in the end it has been a fantastic inaugural season for our rookies, only four of our 38 players that appeared for Chinese Taipei this season have ever had any pro experience before this season. Only Michael Roga is among the top players in the league stats wise, but we play as a team and hopefully win as a team. We will be proud of the first year of the Chinese Taipei come what may. A lot of these players will be the foundation of the future of Riyadh in the years to come.

Great idea for a news item! I almost never look at the standings for R ball, and was unaware of this battle.

I always try my best to keep abreast of all levels, it’s just been that this year Rookie ball has been the only level I’ve completed in. Hopefully I can build on that next year

The Changchun Chippers may be nine games back, but they for sure have the most fun name to say out loud...
