Riyadh not winning but individual performances are better

Things haven’t been good for the Red Crescents recently with only one win after the All Star break and a 1-9 record in their last ten games, but my opinion is still that the team is getting better. We are still adding BBA castoffs that add value to the Red Crescents. Our of those nine losses, seven of them were by three runs or less. We were swept by runaway BANC leaders Mumbai, two games by one-run and one by three-runs. The hope is there, our poor defence is slowly improving, we have made the second most double-plays in the BURT and the second least numbers of errors in the division. We have to improve the pitching though, we’re still at the bottom in most BURT pitching stats, that has to improve if we are to lift ourselves off the bottom of the table. Maybe that will happen with our latest acquisition, 34-yr-old Chris Kelly has arrived on a one year deal with a team option for a second year. He is certainly on the decline from his halcyon days in the BBA where he was once the league’s #2 prospect, he also pitched a no-hitter and won a Landis ring with Jacksonville. Two tommy John’s has wrecked all this, but it’s worth gambling a few million that he’s got enough left in the tank to get a few wins in the UMEBA. Every win is vital to our fans, a bit more hope for the coming years. He will be on a very tight pitch count, at least for the start, and takes the disappointing Luis Gracia’s place in the rotation while Sean Gardner returns to the rotation in place of Francisco Cardona. Both displaced players move into the bullpen. Another piece of good news is that Juan Dominguez has been activated from the IL and will return to the hot corner allowing the inconsistent Freddy McCord to head for the role he was signed for, that of a good utility defensive replacement. The one thing we are really still looking for is a semi-decent shortstop. Many have been tried but none have really cut the mustard. The current incumbent, Zach Swanson, has proved not very good with the glove (-1.8 ZR) and a 34 OPS+ tells you all you need to know how he handles his lumber. The search will go on.

The most impressive thing in the inaugural year is the rookie team Chinese Taipei. Their overall record stands at 26-17 and they have a good chance of making the post season. The pitching staff has a great hand in this, Vatican City Boy, Alba Gallino, has finally got his first pro win (1-0) in his sixth start, but he has only allowed seven earned runs in nearly 33 innings pitched and has an ERA of 1.93. Closer Ricardo Alomar is doing his bit too, in 17 outings he has a 2-0 record with six saves. He’s allowed two earned runs in 27 IP and has struck out 42 batters while walking just five. His ERA of 0.65 is just bigger than his WHIP of 0.61. Bullpen arm Vilfred Werlauff has also just given up two runs in his 18 IP with a 31/6 K/BB. He too has an ERA and WHIP below 1.00. The batters as well are holding their own with four out of the top five in the line-up hitting .347 or higher, Francisco Gonzalez is indeed hitting .475 in the leadoff spot. Michael Roga still leads the way in offensive production with five homers and 24 RBI.
