Back to winning ways thanks to Jerusalem series

The crux of the week was the four-game series against Jerusalem in Riyadh, it made the week and contributed to the record books as well. The week started with a win in the rubber game in the series at BURT leaders Beirut before moving home for that fateful series with the Hebrew Hammers. The first game in that series went 15 innings, the longest ever Riyadh game, before Grady Fern produced a walk-off double. Another win saw the Red Crescents trying to equal their longest ever win streak, but it wasn’t to be as a run by Jerusalem in the top of the ninth snapped the streak and sent Riyadh to a 3-2 defeat. The four-game series drew 98,252 fans, the biggest 4-game series aggregate ever for the Red Crescents and that loss was watched by 27,867 which was the third highest attendance at a game in Riyadh. Two losses at the end of the week in Manama took a bit of the gloss of the week though as a 4-1 week became a 4-3 week.

Despite an ERA north of six Ricardo Quadrado now leads the team with four wins in 2048, not that impressive? Maybe? Until you see that the most wins in a season by a Red Crescent pitcher is only 12 wins. Former Yellow Springs reliever, Alberto Contreras, in his first year in the UMEBA is proving a solid innings eater in the bullpen, only allowing four runs in 20 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.74 and a WHIP of 1.02

Diesel “All-Star” Dave managed two hits this week but added another 10 strikeouts, his total of 54 is now a full ten ahead of Mumbai’s HGH who was considered the favourite to take the “UMEBA K Crown”. DD is currently on course to strike out 230 times in 2048, taking the single-season crown currently held by Mumbai’s Weaver Ripley (223 in 2044); Ripley has currently struckout 1,041 times in his 781 UMEBA games. Despite all his whiffing DD does lead the team in homers, RBI and runs scored. Rule 5 pick Umar Mutemi is really only being used as a bat off the bench, but he’s managed four homers in his 100 plate appearances as he continues to learn, the 23-yr-old has after all never played above Double-A before this season. Masaki Sato still only has five homers in 2048, about half what we’d expect from our slugger, but he is one of three Riyadh players with nine doubles this season.
