A five win haul !! (2046-35)

Five wins in a week !!

The gradual improvement of the Red Crescents really took off this week as Riyadh won five out of their seven games played, and two of them were against BURT leaders Jerusalem, following on from the series win last week against the second placed side Manama. All this brings our tally over the last four weeks to 14-13, if only we can keep somewhere near this level, we’d easily be in that 65-70 win target bracket we’ve set ourselves. The Hebrew Hammers will now open next week with the last game of the series in Jerusalem fighting to get a split of the 4-game series.

Sean Gardner with the 3-0 win over Baghdad has become the first ever Riyadh pitcher to reach the 10-win plateau. He pitched into the eighth innings and allowed just four hits while striking out eight batters. We’re a bit disappointed in Ricardo Quadrado though, after a good start in Riyadh he has slumped to six losses in his last nine starts. He might end up as one on the way out in ’47 if we can find a replacement. Alfredo Diaz on the other hand seems to be adjusting to life in the UMEBA, he’s got his average up to .250 and his ZR at shortstop is only -0.1, not brilliant but a lot better on some of our previous shortstop candidates. We definitely have two areas to look to improve in the off season and that’s the middle infield which has been fairly woeful and the addition of another power bat. Masaki Sato has done is best, he’s currently on course for 43 homers and 112 RBI, but the cast behind him is weak. Only Guillaume Martin (on course for 18 & 51) and Juan Dominguez (who hasn’t been helped by a month out injured and a -2.9 ZR) have any power in the rest of the lineup.

Triple-A Port Elizabeth have continued their revival and now sit at 65-62 after a 5-2 week. Unfortunately, not many on their roster are expected to be able to make the step up to Riyadh. The lads at Chinese Taipei are absolutely heart-broken after their Wild Card race came to nothing. The alterations to their lineup got lost somewhere between Riyadh and China and they only won three of their final six games allowing the Hongkong Bombardiers to sneak the wildcard with a 5-1 final week record. Now some of the Taipei players will have a chance to prove themselves as seven of them make the step up to South Guam (A) for the final month of the Saints season. The only Vatican City pro, Alba Gallino, kinda ruined his first pro season stats with two losses in his last three starts to square his season record at 2-2, but he still has five out of 10 quality starts, has struck out 29% of batters faced, an ERA+ of 121, a 5.7 K/BB, all on a .311 BABIP. He’ll pitch fourth in the Saints rotation while 3B Michael Roga will be their starting 3B, looking to add to his nine homers & 37 RBI in his 40 pro starts. On a BABIP of .400 he had an OPS+ of 211, a WRC+ of 199 and put up 3.6 WAR in his first season in pro ball.
