Cairo 2059.02 : Three re-signings for 2059 and beyond

Post by JRamirez » Tue Apr 16, 2024 11:44 pm

New Cairo GM thought he would retain some players by promising them some money to play the next couple of years, and the results so far are that two pitchers and a key infielder have been signed. The infielder is second sacker Prabhu Vogelsang, 33, His 8.6 ZR was a key to the team's GBC leading 32. "Expect that to go up in '59," said new GM JRamirez. Vogelsang was also among one of six Pharaohs who started 145 or more games last season. While he was the least productive on offense, Vogelsang was retained for his defense. His arm of 3 (yikes) is terrible but odds are Vogelsang will see time in the team's all-new state-of-the-art training facility. JRamirez was on the fence about re-signing the infielder, but his D tipped it to a new one-year contract of $3M. On the other hand, the team's 3B Vasco Fonzarelli, who started 150 games and hit 27 home runs (second on the team) refused to re-sign with Cairo. He went to the expansion Moscow Thunder Bears in the free agent expansion draft (yes, there was one of those in the GBC).

The other four guys who had at least 145 games started were two outfielders Blair 'Breezy' Peyton and 23-year-old Bannon McThomas (.222/28/78/100 walks/2.2war). Infielder Shane Smith led the league with 705 PA and 638 AB. He slugged .456 and did not do so hot as the starting shortstop (-7 ZR!). He won't be starting there in '59. The other 145+ games starter was first baseman Chua-kah Yang, who was not offered a renewal.

The two pitchers who have been re-signed at this point are starter Bani Marita, who led the rotation with 203 IP with a 1.0 WHIP. Only two other Pharaohs pitched more than 125 innings, so JRamirez felt the need to hand Marita 3.1M for each of the next two seasons. He is now the second-highest paid player on the team, just ahead of Vogelsang, but loads behind Peyton's $18M. Pitcher from Sweden, Ragnvard Lamm, also re-upped: $2M guaranteed with a 2M player option. He started 30 games but he will probably start '59 in the pen. Moving to the rotation will be Eduardo 'TNT' Moreno (106 IP out of the pen) and Ernest Carter, 116 ERA+ at Triple-A).
