New GM Dan Waller Embarks on Historic Hiring Spree
Reporting by Tootan Ramseys

When Dan Waller took his seat at the rich mahogany desk situated at the far end of the General Manager's office of Pharaoh Headquarters, the 140 fresh e-mails in his inbox were not what surprised him, nor was it the 11 new staff he had hired overnight, nor was it the 50+ players who had become a part of his organization over the span of just one week in late January.

What surprised this new GM was that he had actually pulled it off.

Dan Waller took over a fledgling Cairo Pharaohs organization that had such a paltry showing for its major league team, residents of Cairo began to wonder whether the sport of baseball was a lost cause for their city. Five pitchers and six batters? And only three players from the AAA, not even enough to play a full game of Settlers of Catan with friends? What would become of the beloved Pharaohs franchise?

But as we know, not all heroes wear capes. And the hero of this story prefers a nice sweater from Banana Republic over a freshly starched button-up. There's no chance that any child of Cairo could mistake such a man for the one who leaps tall buildings in a single bound, but he can still rescue his damsel in distress, even when that damsel takes the form of a baseball team in dire need of help.

Waller is practically hoarse after countless hours on the phone, calling up favors, tracking down leads, pinning down every slugger and hurler he could find. Reliever Shigochiyo Kobayashi was reportedly sitting down to a nice steak dinner with his wife when Waller grabbed him by the collar of his sport coat and whisked him down to his office with an offer to lend his services to the Pretoria Rhinos. And slugger Miguel Hernandez had just polished off a scoop of ice cream he had split with his sweetheart while strolling through the most scenic part of downtown Cairo, reportedly in the process of leaning in for his first kiss when Waller inexplicably shoved himself between the star-crossed lovers, telling his bewildered crush that he was very sorry but that Mr. Hernandez had important baseball business to attend to.

It wasn't pretty, but he got the job done. Gaps remain to be filled, and the actual success of the team is almost certainly the biggest of question marks. But Cairo has a team, and baseball lives on.
"Myself, the boy, two droids...and no questions asked."
