Cairo Off Season and Free Agent Activity
By Khepri Quraishi, Egypt Today Sports

Cairo entered the off season with about $20 million in cash available for free agents. That is somewhat misleading, however, as the team has closer to $11 million free because of the UMEBA salary cap. The rumored team plan is to sign about $10 million in talent, keeping the payroll just under the salary cap. Here’s what has happened so far:
  • Former Phoenix (BBA) and Baghdad reliever Júlio Cuevas has signed a two-year deal for $1.7 million per season. Hopefully he will shore up the bullpen, one of Cairo’s weakest links.
  • The team’s best reliever last year, Lúcio Gómez, has signed a one-year extension for $1.7 million, so he’ll be around through the end of 2050.
  • Infielder Rodrigo Rios has signed a minor league contract but has already been assigned to the 40-man roster. He will earn $900k if promoted prior to day 30 of the regular season. Expect to see him in a Cairo uniform on opening day. He provided superb defense at second, short, or third, and he has good leadership skills. He has prior experience in the BBA with both Sacramento and Louisville. But this is UMEBA.
  • Outfielder Wes Grieve has also signed a minor league contract and already been assigned to the 40-man roster. He will earn $750k as a result of his addition to the 40-man roster. Expect to see him too in a Cairo uniform on opening day. Hard-working, adaptable, and smart, he can play all three outfield positions. He has limited prior experience in the BBA with both Yellow Springs and Boise where he failed to hit big league pitching with any authority.
  • Desperately in need of a dependable closer after 17 blown saves last year, the front office chatted with Jerusalem GM Ben Teague about the possibility of acquiring Jerusalem closer Jan Chmelyk. GM Joe Geoghegan was quoted as saying “We were close to a deal, as close as you can get, but Jerusalem decided Chmelyk was too good to give up. We’ll continue to look elsewhere. Trades in UMEBA are nigh on impossible to successfully negotiate”
Wrap it.
