Cairo 2048 Seasonal Roundup

By Khepri Quraishi, Egypt Today Sports
December 1, 2048

With the newspaper strike over, we are back with news from the world of Pharaoh Baseball. 2048 was a historic year. The expansion Pharaohs met their stretch goal for the season, finishing above .500. From 53-109 (.327) in their inaugural season in 2046 to 70-92 (.432) in their sophomore campaign to 82-80 (.506) this past season, the Pharaohs improved by 29 games over the past two seasons. Here’s a quick seasonal roundup.

The Rotation
  • Johan Trojka had the best WAR (3.6) but was an overall disappointment with a 5-11 record and a 4.89 ERA.
  • Shea Valance earned a 2.9 WAR with his 9-6, 4.34 stats. He was injured at the end of August and missed the remainder of the season.
  • Han-i Kim, the 2047 overasll first draft pick, was promoted in September and posted four wins in five starts with a nifty 3.03 ERA.
  • Edwin Gilliam was steadying influence with a 10-11 mark but his ERA disappointed at 5.01.
  • German Evdakov, a rule 5 draft pick, did surprisingly well: 7-4, 4.48.
  • Chase Walter was the surprise of the year with is 12-4 mark and a 3.58 ERA.
  • Drees Geestman was a massive disappointment and was relegated to the bullpen after just eleven starts.
The Bullpen
Mediocre at best. Ramón Sánchez had eight blown saves and Joaquín Romano had six. The star of the pen was Lúcio Gómez (2.48). Rule 5 pick Fassil Maundu kept his jop but barely. Competitive balance addition Juan Nicto disappointed both as a starter and a reliever.

Hitting
The stars were many!
  • Catchers António Ruíz and Ed Cooper were extraordinary. Starter Ruiz hit .343 with 14 homers, 91 RBIs and a 4.7 WAR in just 129 games. Backup Cooper hit an impressive .331.
  • Competitive balance addition Nacho Méndez started fast at first base but leveled off and was an overall disappointment (-0.7 WAR).
  • Lawrence Blanchard hit a lofty .366 albeit in just 49 games a platoon first basemen against right handers for the second half of the season.
  • David Guerra played second base until Ron Ritchie’s injury forced him to move to third. Guerra hit .289 with 14 homers and 96 knocked in, earning a team leading 5.3 WAR.
  • Cary Brackett was signed after being released by Long Beach in the BBA after just 17 games. Brackett became the starting second baseman when Guerra moved to third. He hit .299 in his 74 games, enough for a 2.1 WAR.
  • Quintin Trewartha had a fine season at shortstop with a .294 batting average, a career best, and a 2.8 WAR. His fielding remains superlative.
  • Outfielder Juan Rocha started the year in AAA after inking a minor league deal but was quickly elevated in May. He hit .340 and led the Pharaohs in home runs with 23 in just 122 games. He earned a 4.1 WAR.
  • Freddy Ayala did very well as the right fielder, hitting .281, stealing 30 bases, and earning a 1.7 WAR.
  • Michel Noël, the star of 2047, fell off a cliff offensively. His batting average dropped 78 points and his WAR dropped from 5.7 to 0.3.
  • Competitive balance addition Frank Mahaffey started very slowly and never got untracked.
  • Designated hitter Eliseu Satino led the league in doubles in 2047 with 60. He proved that no anomaly, smacking 64 in 2048 to again lead the league. He hit .315 and knocked in 96 runs.

We’ll be back later with the roster changes coming up for 2049.

It’s wrapped! Put a bow on it.
