Pharaohs Sign Another Pitcher
Edward Gilliam Signs on One Guaranteed Year

And the Pharaohs surprise us yet again. Today former Calgary pitcher Edwin Gilliam inked a deal that will pay him $3.6 million for 2048 and possibly the same in 2049 if the Pharaohs execute a team option for that second year. Gilliam, age 32, pitched nine seasons with Calgary from 2037 until 2045, winning 110 and losing 80. He went on in 2046 and 2047 to play with Nashville, Long Beach, and Vancouver with varying degrees of success. His lifetime ERA in the BBA is 4.12.

Gilliam has three pitches. His out pitch is his fastball, but he throws an effective cutter and changeup as well. He has excellent control. His acquisition throws another wrinkle into the makeup of the Cairo starting rotation for 2048. It is, however, expected that he will be part of that rotation.

General Manager Joe Geoghegan commented thusly on the late acquisition:
“We weren’t planning on seeking another arm until the readjustment of the team’s media contract to bring it up to par with the rest of the league. That readjustment put an additional $4.5 million on the books. Our financial analysts predict we would have had a balance on hand of over $15.0 million at year-end. The maximum allowed is $10 million. With no bonus fund account like the BBA has, anything over $10 million is lost. Basically, therefore, so long as our analysts are right, this is a no-risk signing. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Spring Training is now in the books. Cairo finished at 11-13. Who cares. Spring Trainings records mean nothing. Rule 5 Guy Fassil Maundu suffered a minor injury and will miss Opening Day on the Injured List. There were no other injuries of note save for Pavlushka Yalunin who would have started the year in AAA anyway. He’ll be out five weeks.

Wrap Time. PLAY BALL!
