The Cairo Pharaohs announced team award winners today.
HITTER OF THE YEAR

Michel Noël wasn’t an All Star with Hawaii in the BBA, but he was a decent enough hitter. When he entered free agency in late 2046, Cairo took a shot and landed him with a three year deal. He has outperformed even the most conservative predictions. He led the league in hits (218), runs (114), triples (15), and was third in doubles (49). His WAR (5.9) was second best in the league.

PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Johan Trojka was a solid winner with Manama, leading the league in wins once and in ERA twice. After joining Cairo via a trade, he struggled mightily with the weak hitting Pharaohs and ended up leading the league in losses (16) in 2046. Johan rebounded nicely this year, posting a 12-9 mark with an ERA of 3.90. He still has two years to go on his contract with Cairo.

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR

While he struggled at the plate early in the year after being acquired via the Rule 5 Draft, Quintin Trewartha was a defensive rock at shortstop from Opening Day forward. His +16.3 zone rating sums up his accomplishments in the field. That was the second best zone rating in the UMEBA regardless of position. He was also sixth in the league at Defensive Efficiency (1.085). After his early season offensive struggles, Quintin hit .301 after June 1st. At 21 years of age, Trewartha has a bright future ahead of him.

BASE RUNNER OF THE YEAR

Freddy Ayala, a superb outfielder, agreed to move to second base this year to keep some other outfield bats in the lineup. While he performed well at 2B, he has moved back to the outfield to make use of his defensive skills there. Freddy is the Cairo career leader in stolen bases with 66. A Rule 5 Draft selection last season, his .311 batting average this year was a pleasant surprise.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE YEAR

After a long career in the BBA from 2036 to 2043, Eliseu Satino ended up in the UMEBA in 2044 with Bucharest. Then he spent 2045 and 2046 in the minor leagues, and his major league career seemed pretty much over. But Cairo drafted him the 2047 Rule 5 Draft, and he became an important contributor to Cairo’s improved performance in 2047. He led the UMEBA in doubles this season with 60 and knocked in 94 runs, second best on the team to Diesel Dave.

That’s a wrap.
