Random incoherent nattering:
  • Ah, natterings. Next season (please hurry up!) this column will be renamed from ”Pharaoh Moans” to ”Nile Natterings.” As per the Cambridge English Dictionary, to natter is “to talk continuously for a long time without any particular purpose.” Sounds appropriate.
  • 161 down, 1 to go. The Pharaohs have won 69 games to date. In a vacuum that sounds terrible (if the vacuum isn’t too loud – but, of course, the vacuum implied here is different from a Hoover). In the stark reality of history in which the locals managed only 53 wins last year, 69 is a substantial improvement. The stated goal was 65 wins. Mission accomplished. The stretch goal was 70. That’s still possible with a win over Bucharest at Pyramid Park tomorrow.

The once popular “Afterlife”, Diesel Dave’s infamous nightclub located adjacent to Pyramid Park, will be shuttered after tomorrow’s final game. Headquarters for rowdy fans more interested in swilling imported Guinness and other alcoholic brews, the club has been roundly criticized by family oriented fans who find it a focal point for abuse. The secret door from the team clubhouse into the bar area was welded shut at the start of this season. Dave himself effectively abandoned the Afterlife after his unimpressive 2046 performance. Perhaps spending less time in the club was a contributing factor in helping improve his numbers. He just became the first Pharaoh to drive in more than 100 runs. He’ll need those improved numbers to find a decent offer as he enters free agency.
  • Shea Valance was expected to be part of the rotation this year. After a horrendous three-game stretch to start the season, he switched tack to the bullpen where the 21-year-old generally pitched pretty well. Last week he returned to the rotation and posted back-to-back six-plus-innings winning efforts. He allowed just two runs in those thirteen innings. He finishes the season with a 10-6 record and a 3.86 ERA. Hopefully that is a harbinger of how he will do next season.
  • Not much has been written about outfielder Adam Adjo this year. Adjo played for the Valencia Stars from 2035 to 2043 before disappearing into the minors. He was briefly a member of the San Antonio organization before being released. Riyadh signed him in March last year and released him within 30 days. Mumbai signed him and he played in AA ball before becoming a free agent again at year end. Cairo signed him at the beginning of this year and assigned him to AAA Pretoria where was hitting .312 when he got he call to report to Cairo. In 51 games with Cairo, 35 of them starts, all he has done is hit .342 and been an invaluable resource off the bench.
  • Cairo officially will NOT not finish in the Banc cellar. That honor will go to Tripoli. So the forecast is for Cairo to have the third pick in the 2048 amateur draft plus competitive balance picks at the end of the first and second rounds.
Next up: Team awards. Stay tuned.
Until then, that’s a wrap.

I'll miss The Afterlife. Legend is that they welded it shut with Rick Chambers still inside, and it will be his final resting place.

It would be a good use for a pyramid. I have 10-15 other names that could be entombed along with Chambers.
Rumor has it the space may be converted into transgender rest rooms next year. The Muslim Brotherhood and the Taliban have voiced their disapproval with that plan.
