Does Diesel Dave (“All Star”) Have a Future . . . . . Somewhere?

Diesel Dave came to Cairo and the UMEBA last season with considerable fanfare. OK, he had lived up to his “All Star” nickname only once – in 2044 while with Chicago in the BBA when he hit only .183, his worst ever batting average But he did have three consecutive 30 home run seasons with Chicago. After becoming a free agent at the end of that 2044 campaign, he joined the Omaha Cyclones where he impressively stroked 46 dingers in 2045 (albeit hitting just .207).

Then he crossed the ocean and signed a two-year deal with Cairo for $12 million in 2046 and a player option $12.575 million in 2047. To say he was a disappointment in 2046 would be a massive understatement. He got his average up to .235, but he hit only 21 home runs and knocked in only 63. Somewhat shockingly he added only 9 doubles and posted a pretty sad slugging percentage of just .389. In his defense, the Cairo ball park turns what would be home runs elsewhere into routine fly balls. But nine doubles?

He, wisely from a personal finances perspective, executed his player option for this year. And he has been significantly better offensively. With seven games to go, he has 28 home runs, 21 doubles, 97 RBIs, and a much improved .472 slugging percentage. And he did make his second All Star team, and, in fact, was named the MVP of the game in a losing effort.

But, for sure, he won’t be wearing a Cairo uniform in 2048. He has continuously stated that he will test free agency at year-end. It is hugely unlikely that Cairo would have sought to extend him had he been willing to listen to offers. Certainly he would have seen a huge pay cut if any offer had been made at all.

We’re not sure what he is expecting to see as a free agent. Is there any interest in the BBA? Will another UMEBA team, perhaps with a more home run friendly ballpark, make an offer? Is his career over? Time will tell.

That’s a wrap.
