Can the Pharaohs Win 70?

So last season the hapless Pharaohs won 53 games. New GM Joe Geoghegan set an unofficial goal to win 65 games this season, a twelve game improvement. Can they win 70? Currently the team’s win percentage is .415. That translates to 67 wins. Geoghegan told me “Even winning 65 is going to be tough. Every team we play from here on out has a better record than us – no more games against Riyadh.”

Cairo has pretty much conceded next year’s first round draft pick top to Riyadh. Riyadh is a full twelve games ahead in the race for the number one pick.

The Pharaohs today unveiled the format for individual player public relation photos. Featured in the announcement is club leading hitter Michel Noël. Noel is in second place in the UMEBA, currently 13 points behind Beirut’s appropriately named Michael Best. Here’s the photo shoot:

There have been some lineup adjustments for the remainder of the season. The changes are predicated on the unexpected signing of free agent infielder Hakim Ngowa. Ngowa was released by a deep Charlotte team in the BBA despite the fact he was hitting .295. He will tentatively take over the starting job at second base. Wally Geoghegan will move from second to first where he is much better defensively. Freddy Ayala, who successfully transitioned from the outfield to play second base for the first ⅔’s of the season, will move to right field as Guillermo Ramírez takes over the designated hitter assignment. These moves substantially improve both the infield and outfield defensive picture. First baseman Lawrence Blanchard and designated hitter Seinosuke Muto move to the bench, and both are probably worried about their future with the club.

Ngowa signed a minor league deal with the Pharaohs in addition to receiving a $210,000 signing bonus. He will make the major league minimum for the rest of the season. However, it is expected that he will look for a salary in the $2.2 million dollar range to extend his contract into next year. It is unknown if the front office might consider paying him that much money into the future.

That’s a wrap.
