What’s Good and What’s Bad

NEWS FLASH: The Pharaohs have won eight of their last ten. Wowsa! Thanks to Riyadh for the four-game sweep in Saudi Arabia, but we also took two of three from Tripoli and Bucharest. Alas, a tough road trip to Mumbai, Athens, and Jerusalem is coming up. Things might look a little more ugly by the time the team returns home again.

Random rambling about some of what’s good and what’s bad about the Pharaohs.
  • Cairo selected eight players in the Rule 5 Draft. Five of them have been returned to their original teams. Three remain with Cairo.
    • Eliseu Satino is clearly the best and most successful of the draftees. The 33-year-old is hitting .291 with 43 doubles and 10 home runs. His WAR to date is 1.4.
    • Shortstop Quintin Trewartha started off the year horribly at .125 in April. He’s been better since then and at age 21 has a decent chance at a long term career as a successful shortstop. His 9.4 zone rating at a difficult position is impressive.
    • Jorge Sandoval has struggled on the mound. He’s 3-9 with a 5.74 ERA. He was terrible in the rotation but has done somewhat better in relief.
  • Freddy Ayala was a Rule 5 pick last year, hitting .246 as the team’s center fielder. If Cairo has a strength, it is its outfield. So with some outfield talent to spare, the Pharaohs this year have transitioned Ayala successfully to second base. His .322 batting average and 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts have been a pleasant surprise.
  • The Pharaohs signed free agent pitcher Jorge Fuentes when he still had three months to serve on the Injured List recovering from a torn elbow ligament. Since rehabbing, he has put up 10 holds and 15 saves while recording a 2.73 ERA.
  • 31-year-old Dashiell Fairebon was signed as a free agent with the expectation that he would anchor a strong infield. Alas, his .149 batting average through 37 games resulted in his demotion to Pretoria (AAA). He has a player option for $1.675 million for next season that he will most likely not execute. Here’s hoping, anyway.
  • Diesel Dave’s stats continue to degrade after a torrid start. His current WAR for 17 home runs and 60 RBIs is just 0.9. He will reenter free agency at year end as he continues his lack of interest in pursuing a contract extension.
  • Interestingly enough, new backup catcher Ed Cooper has attained a WAR of 0.5 after just five games in which he is hitting a remarkable but, of course, unsustainable .526.
  • Did we ever mention that Cairo recently hired a new pitching coach? Ethiopian Uregh Gakuru has taken over the reins with the mound staff. It’s part of a hopefully inexorable trend to upgrade the organization’s personnel staff.
  • While Cairo’s fan loyalty is rated as good, its fan interest, not surprisingly for a cellar dwelling team, stands at just 50. Yet while season ticket sales were down 19% this season, an ominous decline, attendance per game is actually up almost 21%. The team should record a modest profit for the year and have some money in the bank.
  • The most positive aspect in looking forward to next year is that the team will have some Egyptian pounds to spend in 2048. With the Diesel leaving town, the projected payroll will drop from its current level of about $45 million to somewhere between $25 and $30 million depending on whether GM Geoghegan decides recent acquisition Wally Geoghegan is worth over $5 million in arbitration.
