Pharaoh Moans (2047 #8) - Some Changes and a Diatribe
This and That and Expansion Lamentations
By Khepri Quraishi, Egypt Today Sports
June 15, 2047
Another week -- Win 1 lose 6; win 2 lose 5. Etc. Etc. Ho hum.
Geoghegan Claims Geoghegan – After publically stating that it didn’t make much sense to acquire his namesake Wally Geoghegan, GM Joe Geoghegan went ahead and claimed him from non-Panama Manama. For the time being it seems as if Wally will play first base against left handers. He can’t take over second base from converted outfielder Freddy Ayala right now, because Ayala has learned to play second pretty well and, more importantly, is hitting .350. GM Geoghegan, by the way, holds dual US and Irish citizenship and reportedly claimed Wally solely based on his very Irish name (although he hails from Adelaide, Australia). Perversely Tyler Shacklady, a true Irishman from Dublin, has been waived and designated for assignment to make room for Wally.
This Team Can Hit – the Pharaohs don’t trail the division for lack of hitting. They have the best team batting average in the Banc and the most extra base hits. The starting outfielders are hitting .339, .280, and .276. The spare outfielder is hitting .404. Even weak hitting Quintin Trewartha shows signs of life at .250 (.125 in April, .259 in May, and now .327 in June).
Alas they Cannot Pitch – The team ranks fifth of five in every meaningful pitching category statistic. Maybe someday first round pick Han-i Kim and second round pick Gabryjel Pasternak will help. Kim is actually starting out his professional career at AA Chriqui. We’ll see how that optimistic placing works out as the year progresses.
Emoting on the Futility of Expansionism
You can safely ignore this diatribe without relinquishing your permission to read future editions.
As we move further forward into June of the second season for the expansion Cairo Pharaohs, I shall emote for a bit on the futility of being an UMEBA expansion team. The eight other UMEBA teams (save for fellow expansion cellar dweller Riyadh) enjoyed unusually robust amateur drafts in 2044 and 2045. Their farm systems, and increasingly their major league rosters, reflect the depth of those drafts.
Conversely, the league experienced remarkably weak drafts in 2046 and again in 2047. Cairo and Riyadh missed the bonanza years. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the two expansion clubs have by far the worst minor league systems to complement the worst major league rosters in the league. Not much is going to change that minor league system imbalance for quite a few years. That fact, of course, portends badly for Cairo and Riyadh becoming competitive in the foreseeable future.
Trolling the free agency ranks for talent that might do well in the UMEBA as it gets released by BBA teams rich in depth can help some. But, let’s face it, while talent acquired that way may make minor league teams somewhat more competitive, it is not going to make a terrible minor league system more likely to produce quality major league talent in any significant way.
“But free agency is an avenue by which they can improve”, you say. Naturally that is true. However, the new teams also have the lowest budgets, the lowest revenue totals, the lowest cash balances, the lowest ticket prices, and the lowest fan interest ratings. All of those factors essentially result in having less money to go after quality free agents.
“Then trade your top players and build up the farm,” you counter. Sounds like a good idea. Alas, given the dismal team performances, there isn’t a whole bunch of talent that the rest of the league is clamoring to acquire. Sure, Diesel Dave is having a bang-up year. But who is going to want his $12 million salary. And even if a team could afford it, how much would they give up for what would probably be a rental for the rest of the year.
“That’s life", you say. Agreed. It’s the way it is. Those of us in Cairo and Riyadh are living with it. No one is liking it, but all the two teams can do is the best they can. That, unfortunately, is not going to be very good.
That’s a wrap.

It does suck, no doubt. I had fun in my 2.5 seasons in UMEBA because it was a good core of GMs, but certainly the wild draft pools helped. I have no good answer, other than to say hopefully you can move over to the Brewster soon enough.

Exactly what I’ve been saying re expansion all season. It does make it interesting and challenging at the moment, trying to overcome the heavily stacked odds but I don’t know how many years it will be interesting or run as you get battered game after game, month after month and year after year?
Yes, after five, 10, 15 years the super drafts will work their way through the system and we’ll all go back to being equal, but what damage will be done in the meantime? Sure, we both have a guaranteed, unlimited stock of #1 & #2 picks, which are reasonable, but we will be hamstrung by poor fan interest caused by season after season of 90-110 losses and poor finances caused by low ticket prices, needed to attempt to mitigate low fan interest and low attendance.
At the moment it is fun in a perverse way trying to beat those odds ( expensive too, overpaying on FA’s to get them to come to you, only to find them with 1-7 & 1-6 records) but speaking from my El Paso experience it is really grinding once you reach the 500+ losses in five years mark.
Unfortunately there is no answer to the problem, Riyadh and Cairo just have to ride out the intervening years waiting for a shot at parity, a kind of “poor man’s ‘62 NY Mets” Situation

And two & a half years would be fun in a small league like UMEBA if you’re all competing, it doesn’t take much to make that run at the playoffs. If the other team’s A ball team has better players than your major league team it is far more of a hard slog than a joyous time in the sun lol

Given that the Mets won it all in '69, you shouldn't have to wait too long.

“A poor man’s ‘62 Mets”
Given the lack of decent players to plug in, I think the “poor man’s Mets” window will be 10-14 years after their inaugural season lol

We do Matt, the super drafts will work their way through and eventually the teams will all have to rely on the current drafts. Then it’ll be down to the GM skills.
Expansion teams were never supposed to complete out of the box, it’s just that the previous drafts skewed the process timeline
