Nile Natterings

There is nothing much of importance to write about, so I natter.
  • The Pharaohs pretty much slept walked through the first weeks of the season and close in on the end of April with an unimpressive 8-15 record. Last place in the Banc seems pretty much assured, but Riyadh over in the Burt seems better positioned for winning next year’s number one pick. Still, it’s early.
  • Meanwhile, this year’s draft has started. With the number one overall pick Cairo selected 19-year old pitcher Han-i Kim from South Korea. Kim is reportedly fairly well along in his development and could be ready to pitch in Cairo as early as next year. He throws four pitches with about equal effectiveness, but scouts are most excited about his change-up, assuming it continues to develop a bit more. He’s got all the tools to become a star, and Cairo is expected to ink him to a contract without much difficulty.
  • There are rumors about Cairo seeking to attain Wally Geoghegan from Manama. (Why is it that I want Manama to be in Panama?) GM Geoghegan is mum on the topic of namesake Wally. Are they related? In any case, Wally is currently out for a month with a sprained knee. Nothing is likely to happen until he’s ready for action again.
  • Four players have shined in the early going.
    • Catcher Diesel Dave was somewhat of a disappointment last year. He is earning his $12.5 million salary this year – 6 home runs, 22 RBIs, a .371 average, and a .671 slugging percentage. Alas, he is unlikely to be a Pharaoh next season as he has indicated through his agent that he will enter free agency and try to return to the real world.
    • Michel Noël has found UMEBA pitching to be much to his liking – he’s hitting .347 and has stolen seven bases in as many tries. He is signed through next year and has a player option for 2049. One would expect he too will then seek to return to the western hemisphere.
    • Outfielder Freddy Ayala has recently relocated to second base to try to shore up an infield that is collectively hitting under .200. Freddy checks in at .358 with five steals in five attempts.
    • DH Seinosuke Muto is plugging along at .295 and knocking in runs at a pace that would bring him close to 100 by year end.
  • The pitching has sucked save for Miguel Ramos who posts a 2-1 mark and a 3.07 ERA. He is currently on a two-game streak where has given up only one run in 14 plus innings to post his first two victories of the year.
That’s a wrap.

Ramos has gotten good results despite a plummeting K-rate. Can he keep that up?
