Pharaoh Moans (2046-06): Stumbling out the Gate

Post by woods » Thu Mar 04, 2021 12:10 pm

If you’ve looked at the standings recently, you’ve probably noticed that the Pharaohs have started their inaugural season as the worst team in the UMEBA, and not by a close margin. All the early promise the club displayed in a rather promising Spring Training went out the window when the calendar turned to April. Optimists have gone from “they’re just having a rough week, it happens to every team” to “they’re just having a rough month, it happens to some teams” to “okay, this team stinks.”

Let’s take a look back to Opening Day. People say you can tell how the season will go based on the first at-bat of the year. Well, the Pharaohs’ first game started with leadoff hitter Toby Peck striking out on three pitches, before arguing with the umpire over the last one and getting ejected. Peck was designated for assignment shortly after the game.

But to be fair, it’s tough starting the year with so many road games. Remember that lot of these kids are rookies who have never taken a big league road trip before. Surely once they got back into the friendly familiar confines of Pyramid Park, things would improve.

Nope. The Pharaohs promptly trudged through a 2-8 homestand which included losing by a score of 15-3 not once, but twice.

Okay, some of it was bad luck. The Pharaohs are 0-3 in extra innings, with the bullpen, which is supposed to be a strength for the team, giving up narrow victories in all three games. The reality, however, is that those few instances were just badly timed, with the staff usually being taxed from the previous night’s blowout. Give them a few more chances, and they’ll produce better results.

On the offensive side, everyday players like António Baca and Thad Meyer have extraordinarily low BABIPs, and the law of averages should see their production improve soon.

And let’s not discount the few bright spots on the team. Rick Chambers has been hitting very well, even notching a pair of triples in Friday night’s game. There have been rumors that the team is considering trying him out in the outfield, where he’s been seen shagging fly balls in warmups. Manager Kevin Strong would not confirm this, simply saying, “He likes to shag, so I let him shag,” when asked about the team’s plans for Chambers.

Another Rule 5 pick, Freddy Ayala, is leading the Pharaohs with a .398 on-base percentage, and making highlight-reel catches in the outfield nightly.

Let’s be patient with this team. We all waited patiently for several years for baseball to return to Cairo, so we can afford to give these guys a little more time.

Finally, a quick note: Captain Diesel Dave will miss Saturday’s game because he’s attending the funeral of his old GM from Chicago, Vic Caleca. “He’s the guy who gave me my first shot in baseball,” said Dave. “So the least I can do is fly halfway around the world to give him a proper sendoff.”

Lots of good morsels here. Love that Peck story. And the closing was well done, and bittersweet.

That Toby Peck story is pretty funny. Still you haven't had a guy light himself on fire yet. I like Ayala. Nice grab there.
