Pharaoh Moans (2046-05): The Day Dreams Come True

Post by woods » Thu Feb 25, 2021 1:02 pm

Any fringe Major League player will tell you the final weeks of Spring Training are among the most stressful times you’ll experience. Every day, there’s a chance that you’ll be cut from the roster. Just one 0-for-4 could make the difference between you earning a solid six-figure salary or going back to sweat out another summer in Pretoria.

But on the final day, there’s nothing but happiness in the clubhouse. Guys are calling their wives, telling them to cancel that appointment with the moving company, because we’re staying in Cairo. There’s a feeling of hope, the potential that tomorrow is just the beginning of a very long career. From this point on, the words “Big Leaguer” are attached to you, and can’t be taken away, no matter how long or short your stay.

And that’s happening right now for 13 of the 27 players on Cairo’s roster for whom the Major Leagues, until now, had just been a pipe dream. You read that right — nearly half the Pharaohs' roster has played a grand total of zero games in the UMEBA or the BBA.

So let’s show them some appreciation, because today it’s all about them.

First, there are the Rule 5 guys, who were covered in greater depth during the winter. In the end, Freddy Ayala, Roberto Souza, Eric Bigalow, Rick Chambers, Jeff Bayer and Phil ‘Death Rattle’ Brown were deemed worthy of roster spots. Chambers is deserving of a special shout-out, since he has never even played above A-ball, but he hit .312 this spring, and on Opening Day he will be the Pharaohs’ starting shortstop.

Then there’s four-fifths of the starting rotation, or in other words, everyone except Johan Trojka. So congratulations to Miguel Ortíz, Bronislav Kauphsman, Germán Bocanegra and Pancho López, as this will be their first taste of the bigs.

Is management concerned about so much inexperience on the staff? GM Woody Donahue was asked this question in a recent press conference, to which he replied, “These are our guys, for now and the expected future. They won the jobs, and we believe in what they can do for us.”

Next, Ken Hall raked this spring, and won the fifth outfielder spot without contest. It helps that he can play all three outfield positions and hit lefties very well.

And finally, Jorge Olvera and Juan Trujillo will be joining the bullpen. Trujillo in particular really impressed in Spring Training, not allowing a single run in 12 spring appearances.

So here’s to the 13 of you. And let’s take a moment to appreciate expansion baseball, since without it, almost all of these guys would be on planes somewhere above the Sahara right now.

You did a great job shaping your team beyond the original slew of warm bodies that you were handed. Looking forward to seeing how they do, and looking forward to the Rick Chambers bobblehead promotion.
