Pharaohs Right the Ship a Bit
Noël Hitting Streak Ends at 40

By Khepri Quraishi, Egypt Today Sports
April 28, 2048

Your venerable reporter is back after some time away at the ocean. It’s essentially the end of the month now. After that depressing 1-3 start, the Pharaohs continued to look bad by losing five more in a row to extend the losing streak to eight before finally winning again. That win prompted an 8-4 run before two more losses at Bucharest set the season-to-date record at 9-14. Considering the awful start, it could have been worse.

The Rule 5 Draft controversy was resolved in favor of the Pharaohs. Fassil Maundu will be back in a Cairo uniform for tonight’s game at Bucharest, freshly returned from an incorrect Rule 5 Draft return to Jerusalem and freshly off the disabled list. Mon Dieu, Moundu.

So what’s been going right and what’s been going wrong?:
  • Shea Valance and Johan Trojka are supposed to anchor the rotation. They are winless between them and have a comnied ERA over 6.00. That won’t do, boys.
  • Closer Ramón Sánchez is supposed to lead the bullpen. His ERA is an uninspiring 6.23 and he already has three blown saves. Yikes.
  • Other than that, the pitching hasn’t been terrible.
  • Last April Quintin Trewartha couldn’t buy a base hit. We guess April isn’t his month because he’s at .178 as we speak. Hopefully that draught ends soon.
  • Michel Noël is hitting like last year never ended. He’s at .351 with a .671 slugging percentage. His 40 game hitting streak going back to last season was just ended by Bucharest.
  • Starter António Ruíz and backup Ed Cooper are doing excellent work behind the plate and hitting close to .300 between them. Keep up the good work, guys!
  • Slick-fielding but banjo-hitting Freddy Ayala had replaced power-hitting Frank Mahaffey in the outfield as Mahaffey struggled mightily at the plate.
  • Mahaffey will be back in left field again now, however, as similarly struggling Guillermo Ramírez will miss at least two months with a broken hand.
  • New third baseman Ron Ritchie has started strong. He’s hitting a nifty .321.

    That’s a wrap for now

Nice little hitting streak by Mr. Noel. I guess that 5 for 6 game against Portland in 2046 got him on the right track.
