2057 Brisas Watch - Sim #2 review

SYD @ BUA
Game 1 – SYD 5 BUA 3
The Brisas blow an early lead in the 6th, with starter Antonio Ramirez and reliever Dani Martinez combining to give up three runs. It had been a solid outing for Ramirez up to that point, and ended with two earned runs given up in 5.0 innings. The offense can’t bail them out, with only Mark Moon scoring more than one hit.

Game 2 – SYD 2 BUA 4
A big first inning is enough to see the Brisas tie the series, including a home run from Gary Robertson. Juan Guzman goes 5.0 innings in his first start as a Brisa, giving up five hits and one run.

Game 3 – SYD 5 BUA 3
Another strong start ends with Richard Balgera giving up all five runs across the 4th thru 6th innings, being pulled after 5.1 innings of work. The Brisas had led 3-1, including a home run from Andrew MacColl.

Game 4 – SYD 8 BUA 3
It’s a disappointing start for Ferede Keohi, who gives up five runs in just 3.2 innings. His reliever, Ostoja Omeragic proceeds to give up a bases-clearing double in the 5th also. It proved too much to overcome for the offense, who actually outhit Sydney by 12-9.

BUA @ TOK
Game 1 – BUA 7 TOK 4 (11)
The first Brisas game to go to extras falls in favour of the visitors, with a bases-clearing double from Carl Eassson proving decisive. The Brisas had been behind until the 8th, before a 2-RBI triple from Issaco Aglietti and a 2-run homer from Tyler Shacklady put them 4-2 ahead. The Pearls managed to level it in the 9th with a 2-run home run of their own, before the Eassson double put the game to bed in the 11th.

Game 2 – BUA 3 TOK 1
It’s a late affair in the second game of the series, as the Brisas find themselves 1-0 down in the 9th before an RBI double from Issaco Aglietti ties the game. RBIs from catcher Enrique Mendoza and another from Tyler Shacklady gives the Brisas a 3-1 lead that they wouldn’t give up.

Game 3 – BUA 2 TOK 1
The Brisas come from behind yet again, though not quite as late, with RBI singles from Aglietti and Chad Edwards completing the sweep for Buenos Aires. Starter Juan Guzman has another good start, going 6.2 innings and giving up just one run.

The Week in Review
It’s a similar story to the first week of the season, with a disappointing series defeat being followed up by a sweep. The manner of the victories is probably not too sustainable, coming from behind late on, but we cannot be disappointed with another winning week and an 8-5 record, just two games back from the GBC-leading Athens.

The offense is certainly an improvement on last season, though we currently seem to be lacking ini the home run department – 6th in the GBC, with the team leaders (tied between Shacklady and MacColl) having went yard just twice.

The good news in that sense is that Cesar Torres has overcome the strained oblique he suffered in pre-season, and will return to the lineup immediately – the man to lose out is 1B Barry O’Quinn, who is DFA’d. Torres will assume a DH role against lefties, as well as splitting time at 1B.

On offense, the likes of Gary Robertson and Issaco Aglietti continue to impress early on, while backups such as Enrique Hernandez and Tyler Shacklady are making the case for increased playing time. While it might still be down to small sample size, decisions will likely be taken within a couple of weeks regarding depth charts.

The starting pitching isn’t quite as dominant as it was last season, but overall we are still doing well on the mound. We are helped massively by a bullpen ranked 2nd in the league after two weeks in terms of ERA. The big standout is off-season acquisition Payton Jones, with an ERA of 2.25 in 8.0 innings and is also rocking a 2.12 FIP, good for a 45 FIP-. Another new Brisa, Arsenio Lambrinos, is also looking solid, holding opponents to a .067 AVG in 5.0 innings – his one hit given up was a home run however.

Congrats on the sweep of my team. Extra-inning and late inning losses are always tough.
