2057 Brisas Watch - Sim #1 review

Opening Day Roster
After ending Spring Training 15-15, GM Swain was left with some decisions to make when it came to cutting down the roster to 27. The biggest name who didn’t make the cut was new signing Juan Guzman, who will start the season in the ABA with his minor league option. Expect him to be a call-up over the coming month as the roster churn begins.

Following the debut of Evgeny Daibov at the end of last season, another young pitcher will be make the Opening Day 27 in the form of Ferede Keohi – it is believe that his contract situation meant it was impossible for him to be demoted without being DFA’d, and GM Swain did not want to risk losing a talented pitcher like Keohi for free.

BUA @ SAO
Game 1 – BUA 4 SAO 9
The Brisas open the 2057 season with a disappointing defeat, as new starter Enrique Lopez gives up 3 early runs in just 2.0 innings of play, followed by another three runs given up by reliever Steve Wauchope before leaving the game early with blisters. One bright spot for the Brisas is a 3-5 day for new 2B Gary Robertson, including two doubles.

Game 2 – BUA 4 SAO 8
It's another defeat for the Brisas, with last year's ace António Ramirez being pulled after just 1.1 innings after giving up two early runs. Glove-first CF and renowned slugger Jose Carlos hits grand-slam in the 8th, but by then the damage had already been done.

Game 3 – BUA 8 SAO 5
The Brisas prevent a sweep with a solid victory, with a good start for Richard Balgera, giving up just one hit in 3.0 innings. New signings Tyler Shacklady, Roy MacGugan, Carl Eassson and Andrew MacColl each hit their first home run as Brisas. (Yes that is how many s's Eassson has)

ATH @ BUA
Game 1 – ATH 4 BUA 8
A big 8th inning sees the Brisas secure a win in their opening home game of the season, with multi-hit games for Eassson and MacGugan, as well as outfielder Issaco Aglietti. New DH Mark Moon drives home his first RBI as a Brisa.

Game 2 - ATH 2 BUA 3
The Brisas leave it late again with another important 8th inning to take the lead and the win, featuring two RBI singles from Chad Edwards and new catcher Enrique Mendoza. Ferede Keohi makes his GBC debut, giving up just two runs in 5.0 innings of play.

Game 3 - ATH 2 BUA 7
It's an opening home series sweep for the Brisas as they secure an impressive win, including a 3-run homer for Aglietti - his opening slashline stands at .348/.400/.522 as he looks to grow his role in the team. New utility man Enrique Hernandez goes 3-4, including a double.

The Week in Review

With the Brisas bullish about their hopes going into the 2057, their season got off to a solid 4-2 start, though Swain will be disappointed at the series defeat to Sao Paulo first time out. He will also be asking questions of the decision of Coach Inkster to pull the starters early on in games – rumours are abound that he did not feel they were suitably ready for the start of the season, but the inquest will continue.

As it happened, one starter who did complete more innings was debutant Ferede Keohi, and Swain will be delighted to see him perform well in his introduction to the GBC. He will also be happy with the opening contributions from some of his incomings, notably Gary Robertson who has started very well albeit in a limited sample. He will do well to replicate his .500 AVG and 22% walk rate over the course of the year, but he is already showing well compared to similar options last year.

The early struggles shown by the lefty bat Mark Moon will be some cause of concern, as he is hitting sub-.200 early on. He arrived to much fanfare, and it will be interesting to see how much patience is shown to him before any changes are made.

There was also further news on the injury front, as César Torres’ return from a strained oblique has been put back – it’s unknown how much longer he will be out for, which will also be a concern for the front office who gave him $7 million in the off-season.
