This was always going to be an interesting off-season for the Brisas, and with the 2056 season now officially over, GM Swain has already made some big decisions, and there have been some casualties.
Deron Alexander has decided to void his option for 2057. He had found himself out of the rotation towards the end of the season, and will now test free agency to presumably find a team who will utilize him as a starter.
The Brisas have decided not to take up Bani Marita’s option, which would have left the Brisas on the hook for $3.6 million. He is a player who some scouts still believe has starter ability, and while there is still some scope to see Marita return, the Brisas seemingly do not believe he represents good value.
Reliever You-cheng Hang, who is the player with the most games appeared in in the history of the GBC, is also gone – he was due to make $2.333 million, and is coming off a poor season that saw him lose a game worth of WAR, with his WHIP having ballooned by over 0.3.
Infielder Reilly Eddy endured a difficult season, a year removed from a promising year with Athens where he put up a 122 OPS+ in just 101 games. It was not enough for the Brisas to take up his $1.2 million option, and he will now hit free agency.
They have unsurprisingly taken up their option on António Ramírez, who led the GBC in ERA this year. He will now make $3.2 million in 2057, and will no doubt anchor a new look rotation.
In terms of arbitration, the Brisas are believed to have failed in an offer to settle with 1B Talbot Purcell, who showed well in a cup of coffee in September – his number is likely to be around $2.2 million. The rest of their arbitration class, including the likes of Dan Grigoras and Jeremy Donahue, are likely to be non-tendered.
There is a sizeable class of players who are also hitting free agency, headlined by Darren Asseldonk, who put up 2.6 WAR in just over 120 innings this year. Another big name will be incumbent catcher Miguel Hernandez – he put up excellent defensive numbers in 2056, but his ask is proving too great for the Brisas to meet at this time.
