BUA @ ATH
Game 1 – BUA 11 ATH 12 (10)
The Brisas blow a 10-7 lead in the 9th, with closer Baz Badr giving up 3 runs to force extra innings. Despite an RBI-double from catcher Miguel Hernandez (who put up a 5-RBI day) in the 10th, the Centaurs put up a 2-run homer to walk the game off. Incredibly, Hernandez was not the only 5-RBI performance for the Brisas, with RF Gene Meade also driving home 5.

Game 2 – BUA 2 ATH 7
Dan Grigoras’ first start of the season sees him strike out 5 while giving up 4 runs in just over 5 innings of work. The offense hits well but can’t quite drive in the runners.

Game 3 – BUA 6 ATH 1
The Brisas overcome a 1-0 deficit late on, including a 5-run 8th inning. Starter António Ramírez strikes out 6 in 6 innings, giving up just 1 run to keep his ERA below 3.00. A bases-clearing double from Benjamin Chapman seals the win for the Brisas, as the switch-hitting shortstop is now hitting over .250 in the month of September.

Game 4 – BUA 2 ATH 3
Another late heartbreak for the Brisas, who lose the series to a walk-off homer off Bani Marita. Starter Marvin Winston gives up just 2 runs and 4 hits in 7.0 innings to maintain his run for GBC Pitcher of the Year.

BUA @ LON
Game 1 – BUA 9 LON 1
The long-awaited debut from top prospect Evgeny Daibov sees him strike out 4 Monarchs and give up a single run in an impressive 7.2 innings. César Torres cracks the 100-RBI mark on the season with a 3-5 day, including a double and a home run.

Game 2 – BUA 4 LON 1 (10)
It’s the Brisas who secure the late win this time, with home runs from Kozma Gizikis and Roberto Torres in the top of the 10th being enough to take the win and the series over the Monarchs.

Game 3 – BUA 2 LON 6
The Brisas can’t bring home the sweep as the offense dries up, putting up just 3 hits all game. Starter Dan Grigoras is credited with the loss, though striking out 5 and giving up 4 in 7.0 innings was a solid if unspectacular day’s work for the Romanian, who is trying to play his way into Swain’s 2057 plans.

The week in review

The week began with the long-anticipated promotion of #7 overall prospect Evgeny Daibov to the GBC roster. With the ABA season now complete and the Ndali Barons not progressing to the post-season, GM Swain sees this as the perfect time to get a look at what the Russian is worth.

César Torres signs a 1-year $7 million extension to stay with the Brisas through 2057. The 6’8 Salvadoran has by far been the Brisas most productive hitter this season, this week eclipsing 100 RBIs on the year. GM Swain is delighted to have secured his services for another year. “César has been an integral part of our offense and is certainly in the conversation for being one of the best hitters in the league. Keeping him on board for next season gives us something to build around as we look to make it back to the post-season.”

In terms of the news from on the field, it was a middling week for the Brisas, who go 3-4 with another disappointing series defeat to Athens – the complexion of the season would be looking very different if games 1 and 4 of the series had been flipped, rather than the late defeats. As it is, they are now 7.5 games back from the tie at the top of the GBC, with 12 games left to play. Interestingly, their 5-5 record over the last 10 games has still seen them close the gap to the teams in front of them.

The impressive debut from top prospect Daibov against the league leading Monarchs will no doubt be encouraging for the Brisas, who are still working out where they stand going into 2057. With the extension of Torres now confirmed, there are the signs of a core starting to be established around which Swain will build around.
