From the GM - 2047 #2 - Big (Injury) Trouble in Little Tripoli

Where to start, where to start?

Do I start with our barely .500 record? The absolute regression of our best starting pitcher? Or maybe the major injury to our biggest off-season pick up?

Let's start with that record. Coming off of a wild card appearance in the playoffs, expectations were high to start the year off. After a blistering 16-9 start in the month of April, we stumbled to an 11-16 mark in the month of May and have started off June with a 3-4 record. Injuries to a handful of starting pitchers and a power hitting outfielder definitely take some of the blame, but regression amongst our hitting and pitching has been a cause for greater alarm.

This leads to the regression of our best and brightest arm, Mahad Einan. On first glance, it would appear that Einan is just pitching very poorly. But a look under the hood shows that he has been extremely unlucky. Left-handed hitters have hit .366 with an .882 OPS vs Einan, but that is buoyed by an unsustainable .424 BABIP. Such an absurdly high number is definitely fueled by a league average defense that is dreadful on groundballs, so the team will definitely get in added groundball work during practice to help out Einan and the rest of our pitching staff.

Speaking of starting pitching, the best pitching we have had this year has come from none other than offseason trade addition, Liam Dalton. We knew when we traded for him that he had a tricky injury history, but we were betting on him not missing much, if any time, with the Pirahna. Alas, Dalton and the injury monster are undefeated and we will now be without our best performing starting pitcher for the better part of 3 months. Not only had Dalton been our best starter, he was also on pace to put up the best numbers he has ever had in the UMEBA. It will be very tough to replace that production, but we will start by looking within the organization at some of our AAA depth before deciding if another trade will be needed to stabilize our pitching.

I want to conclude this by saying that all is not lost on the season. It is a marathon, not a sprint, after all, and hopefully our luck self corrects with a few more balls finding open patches of green and a few more opponents grounders finding our gloves a bit more often.

I hope we look back on this little post as just a small blip in the season and June sees us self correcting the course and places us near the top of the standings and in a better position to make a title run!!
