Piranha Bites: 46.02 - Who's on First?

Tripoli, March 6, 2046
-- Front office types in the Piranhas organization leaked us some info on some youngsters -- not even on the 40 man roster -- who are getting a close look in the soon-to-start UMEBA spring training. Let's take a look:

First Base: Morgan Hollinger was a huge disappointment for the Piranhas in 2045, hitting just .245 -- a 50 point drop from his .291 average in '44. The team is clearly openly wondering if Hollinger, at 29, has begun a decline.

With that in mind, the team has invited 24 year old Alejandro Carranza to spring training. Carranza has not played above AA, but he had an excellent season last year, including a .286 average and 22 home runs in just 79 games with AA Caracas. Is he ready for the bigs? Doubtful. But competition is a good thing, and the team wants to see how both the veteran Hollinger and the newcomer Carranza fare at first this spring.

Shortstop: The situation at short for the Piranhas is opaque, so who did the team get? O. Paek!

That's right, 27-year old O-min Paek, known to his teammates as 'Minny,' was drafted in the rule 5 draft (Round 1, Pick 5, 5th overall Pick) by the Piranhas, from the Manama Pearls. O. Paek was brought in strictly for his glove, since last year's starting shortstop Sixto Palma was horrendous in the field, notching an eye-popping -19.6 zone rating. My grandmother could do better. O. Paek has no bat, but the runs he will save compared to Palma will more than compensate. Surprisingly, O. Paek even hit a dinger in one of his first spring training games with his new team, so maybe he might even contribute a bit at the plate.

At the same time, there is a slight battle at short: the club is also giving a look-see at a youngster, 20-year old Burt Davies out of Melbourne. Davies was an undrafted free agent back in '42, so he's been around long enough to no longer be considered a prospect, but the team wants to see if the kid might provide a better offense-to-fielding balance that Minny.

Palma is still sticking around for the moment, but the club has already been shopping him to other clubs, and with no takers, he may end up a roster casualty when the cut to 27 comes.
