Let's be honest. This has been long overdue! Especially for someone that has done as much writing as I have in the past (3 books and a lot of words!) But I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and my playing style as well as providing a bit of context for all of you.
Being Scottish my relationship with Baseball has not been quite the same as most of you. I didn't grow up with the game as an everyday part of life and there were no opportunities to play it during my childhood. Football(soccer) was, and still is, my sport of choice and I'm lucky enough to work full time. in the sport now. Baseball came to be later in life. I was at University (our College) and two of my kids had been born so I needed to make money while still studying and spending time with my family. That meant I worked security in bars and clubs in town and it meant a long walk there and back for each shift. That's around the time that I discovered the Up and In Baseball Podcast with Kevin Goldstein and Jason Parks and their long back catalogue.
My interest in Baseball was kick started from there.
A few years ago I started to realise that there was a chance that I could make a living from football, I currently work full-time for a club in the Premier League as a scout, but I realised with no real contacts or playing background I needed an edge. That's when I started to use data and analytics more frequently. At first it was just excel, and then I discovered Tableau. Eventually I realised that I needed more so I taught myself how to code and use machine learning.
This has led to my building models for work based on our game model in order to identify players that we can scout and target. Then to hosting these on (very simple!) apps. Apps like these.
So, how does then apply to OOTP and more specifically to Brewster?
Well, I have decided to apply some of the same logic and model building here in order to build my organization. To be absolutely clear my model for OOTP at the moment is far from perfect but it is very much a work in progress. Part of what is so amazing about Brewster, and about being able to start in GBC, is that there is so much to learn. I have already started tracking the transactions of the teams that I think are building their rosters in the same way that I want to and reverse engineering their decisions to adjust my models. At this stage at Buenos Aeries we are very much in a learning phase but I plan to be a lot more invested from this point on.
Here's an example of some of the models that I am currently using from my single player save.
This is a simply display for hitters in my model, but I will keep the Pitchers models to myself for now. Like I said my models are far from perfect but they do allow my to be consistent in my decision making.
Consistency is probably the key to all of this for me.
Consistency in building a roster and organization using models to identify players. Consistency in learning and improving by paying attention to the Brewster. Consistency in being engaged and present.
Thanks for reading this, if you have made it all of the way through, this is just the start with more team specific posts coming soon. If you want to reach out about any of this then feel free to drop me a message on Discord.
Thanks for having me!
