7 Pitchers Over 70 That Could Still Play

7 Pitchers Over 70 That Could Still Play

Now that we have looked at the hitters, let’s see who can still throw a ball. As would be expected the pitchers have not held up as well as the hitters and would have trouble making our rosters today. Still, we need somebody to throw batting practice to those old hitters, so here is the list in no particular order. Also no photos for these guys as there were none available.

73 year old SP 45 Act, 45 Pot Lenard Barbosa 5/6/6 - “The King” still has 3 good pitches, including a 9 changeup, and decent movement and control. During his 9 year career with Seattle, he split his time between the rotation and the bullpen. He finished off his career with 2 years in the EBA. He can still go the distance with his 9 stamina.

70 year old SP 60 Act, 60 Pot Dave Blain 6/6/7 - He only had a 3 year career with Buffalo and then at 25 he disappeared. Known for his fastball can still throw the 98 mph heat. He has a decent 8 curve to go with the 9 rated fastball and the ladies at the home like his 9 stamina. Problem is they can't ever find him. A 70 year old that can still throw like this is magic.

72 year old SP 45 Act, 45 Pot Lee Dedoux 5/5/5 - Three pitches that are 7 or better including a 9 fastball got Dedoux on the list. He had a stellar 16 year career, mostly with New Orleans, and was selected to 4 all star games. His 3312 strikeouts rank 14th on the all time list.

72 year old SP 40 Act, 40 Pot Garlands P. Gumdrop 5/6/7 - His name is good enough to make the list, but so are 3 good pitches and nice control. A journeyman with a 13 year career and a losing record, Gumdrop split his time between the rotation and the pen. Compared to other pitchers of his time it is surprising that he held on so long, but he is just what we need for our over 70 squad.

77 year old RP 40 Act, 40 Pot Mitchell Algarin 7/5/4 - Another guy with a 9 fastball and 8 stamina at his age is pretty impressive. Our first pure reliever, Algarin was a rookie in 1993 and gone after 1995. He as frankly a terrible pitcher with a career 6.11 ERA and a 9-12 record. Completely forgettable until now, when he comes out of the home and throws a 97 mph strike.

74 year old RP 35 Act, 35 Pot Bobby Jefferson 7/6/3 100 MPH - Yep you read that right, he still hits triple digits on the gun, but its just as likely to be in your ear as over the plate. Jefferson through out of Louisville’s bullpen for 5 years, nothing spectacular, but he got the job done. Looks like he was mostly middle relief or a setup man. Averaged more than a strikeout per inning, but also 5 walks per 9.

78 year old SP 40 Act, 40 Pot Joshua Francis Kellogg 2/8/10 - Our last choice is the opposite of Jefferson, he throws slower than his mother, who is still alive at 102, but he always nails his spot. None of his pitches are good, but he must put something on it. They spin and sink and move like Joe’s Tinder date, but they always end up over the plate. Rumors are he isn’t just pulling up his pants between pitches but dipping into the Depends for what he puts on the ball. Kellogg pitched for 14 years in the BBA, with Valencia and Washington and had a respectable career ERA of 3.67.

Honorable Mentions

75 year old RP 45 Act, 45 Pot Aaron Fidler 5/6/8 - Nothing special in his day, but still has a great curve.

80 year old RP 45 Act, 45 Pot Kevin Mee 5/6/8 - He almost made the top 7. Looks like his heat is better now then when he was in California.

70 year old SP 35 Act, 35 Pot Allen IzattAllen Izatt 5/6/4 - A HOFer who still can pitch, one of the leagues greats.

78 year CL 30 Act, 30 Pot Jose NunezJose Nunez 6/4/4 100 MPH - Yep pushing 80, he still throws 100+. We could use him back in Calgary now!

Cool concept. It'd be cool if a team could "unretire" a player for 100 ppt or so...

Like Satchel Paige coming back for a game in 1965.
