Call it what you will, but the Alhafrseem to have hit a turn towards success. A six game Kuwait City winning streak was snapped by Mumbai yesterday. The highlight of the winning streak included sweep of first place Cairo Chariot Archers. 1B Dimião Laqui was the Alhafr player of the week after hitting 3 HR and putting up a 1.615 OPS in 13 AB.
“It feels great to get so much playing time. I was ecstatic when we signed Drew Hair, but I was a little worried I might not see as many at bats. I’m just happy to do my part in helping the team win. I think having Drew in the lineup takes a lot of pressure off me and the competition pushes me to do better, but I wish I could have had a chance to make an impact tonight” said Laqui after last night’s loss.
Fingers can be pointed as to why the hot bat was not in the lineup, but the past is the past. Kuwait City is looking forward to this upcoming week of matchups, highlighted by a four game set against Istanbul. GM Chad Nason said he wanted to create havoc on other teams’ playoff plans and was excited with Cairo’s results. Now he hopes the Alhafr can disrupt Istanbul’s hope at the top of the standings. But these temporary nuisances to top teams is just part of the larger picture. Nason has plans to create a dynasty and has turned to the 2042 amateur draft in hopes to find a few gems to fill in for big league roles in the future.
Tasked with a difficult decision with the first overall pick, Nason selected 2B Bernie Young over the likes of phenom closer prospect, Quon Chien.
“This squad has a bunch of fight in ‘em, but we lack the type of player to put us over the top on a daily basis. We feel that Bernie will be an MVP-caliber player for us for years to come. That kid in Honiara is phenomenal, but we don’t think he will have the ingredients to help our club win day in and day out. With a couple of years of development, Bernie should be able to help keep us at the top of the table” says Nason.
Staying at the top of the table indicates that Nason has plans to get to the top of the table. That remains to be seen, but Young wasn’t the only player drafted to help keep them there. After Young’s selection, Nason addressed Kuwait City’s biggest need with a couple of high school arms. Thomas Mclaren and Gerry Jarvis were taken with the second and third round picks, respectively. Jarvis was a teammate of Chien’s and the hope is Jarvis was impacted by Honiara’s pitching coach as much as Chien.
It’s been a tumultuous start for the Alhafr, but it seems like Chad Nason just might be backing up his talk. Time will tell what other tricks he has up his sleeves, but his tenure as GM is off to a good start. With a wildcard owner like Domingo Rivera, the future is never certain, so we get the honor of watching this unfold in real time.

I'm sold on your draft selection... a reliever at first overall, no matter how good, doesn't make you better day in and day out like you said.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

Agreed. Plus my team is never in a save situation anyway....he would just be a damage control guyshoeless.db wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 2:55 pmI'm sold on your draft selection... a reliever at first overall, no matter how good, doesn't make you better day in and day out like you said.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Shoeless. As much as pitching is a premium in the Brewster landscape, I feel like a good closer is easier to find than a cornerstone middle infielder. I like the pick...interested in how Young got his nickname. Hoops background? Or foreboding career trajectory?

Bernie was a multi-sport star in high school, but received anonymous threats about pursuing a career in basketball over baseball. The phone number was coming from a +965 country code, oddly enough.jleddy wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 3:41 pmCan't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Shoeless. Chien would have made an interesting SP conversion, though.

Doesn't even qualify because his stamina is too low.

Trust me, that was the first thing I looked up when I saw the draft pool.

Speaking as a fellow bottom-feeder team, it’s a marathon not a sprint, Rome wasn’t built in a day lol. It’s nice to turn a franchise round straight away but we all have time on our hands, those big tankers can take a while to turn even with the strongest hand on the wheel
