Blue & White April Issue 1 2042

Post by Clayman » Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:09 pm

Athens Fighting Centaurs (0-0)
Beirut Cedars (0-0)
Tuesday 1st April 4-0, Wednesday 2nd April 3-1, Thursday 3rd April 2-3.

Makin Shuts Out Beirut

Maxim Makin pitched 7 innings of 1 hit baseball in not only his debut for the Centaurs but the debut of the Athens ball club in the UMEBA, things couldn't have gone more perfect if Athens had written the story themselves. 9 batters came to the plate 6 of them gaining hits, Billy Hardy one of those who was hitless actually got on base twice with a couple of walks. Makin was helped in the pitching department by Farrell and Yoofi, Farrell gave up a couple of hits but never looked troubled, Yoofi faced 1 batter, struck him out, got the save in a 4-0 win simple as that.

Gibson Pitches 8 Innings In 3-1 Win

Gibson looked shaken early on, giving up an early run in the second. However it seemed to be the same up call he needed, after that it was as though he had clicked into gear. Apart from the 5th it was plain sailing with 3 up 3 down baseball for the Maryland native.

Pagan Gives Up 2 Early Runs

It seemed déjà vu for the Athens pitching, Pagan gave up early runs like Gibson the day before, the bullpen of Meyer and Farrell came in and shut Beirut down just like the day before, another win? Sadly not as déjà vu was sitting on the bench and missing from the Centaurs line up

Bucharest Impalers (1-1)
Athens Fighting Centaurs (2-1)
Saturday 5th 6-9, Sunday 6th 4-3, Monday 7th 9-8.

Impalers Burst Athens Balloon

The party started early, around about 7am the fans started to turn up at Piraeus Park, the game started early 11:05am. Sadly the win didn't start early, in fact it never started at all. Ramadhin the starting pitcher for Athens and Mao the first out of the bullpen just couldn't stop the flow of hits, in fact all 9 of the Bucharest line up managed to get on base after making contact with bat on ball in a 9-6 win. It did seem a miracle was on the cards in the 9th as Athens went into the inning 9-3 down when Loftis & Hardy made it 9-6 but it turned out to be a step too far for the Centaurs.

Athens Fly The W At Piraeus Park

The Centaurs players nor their fans were going to let the Impalers spoil the party for a second day in a row, all was going well as Athens went in front 1-0 in the bottom of the 2n. The wheels did seem to come of a bit in the top of the 4th & 5th when Bucharest went in front 3-1, however Athens pulled within 1 in the bottom of the 5th, tied the game in the 6th and broke the deadlock in the bottom of the 7th to take a 4-3 lead which they held for the rest of the game.

Gibson Fails Centaurs Win

Many were expecting some kind of pitchers duel when Gibson of the Centaurs faced of against Rabisca of Bucharest, little did we know Rabisca would last only 3 innings giving up 7 runs and Gibson doing no better with 6 runs given up in 2 innings. However there was some semblance of a pitchers duel as the Athens bullpen pitched 7 innings giving up only 1 run and the bullpen of Bucharest giving up 2 runs in 5.1 innings but they couldn't stop Athens winning 9-8 and back to back victories against Bucharest.

Beirut Cedars (4-2)
Athens Fighting Centaurs (4-2)
Tuesday 8th 3-8, Wednesday 9th 4-3, Thursday 10th 11-9.

Cordona Beats Athens Single Handed

Every dog as it's day and game 1 of the Beirut at Athens series seems to have been Pierre Cordonas day, he'd come into the game with a mighty .087 AVG so you kind of forgave the Centaurs if they felt he was an easy out, how wrong they were. He ended the day with 5 AB 2 R 3 H 2 RBI and a home run to boot, he did more in one game than he had done in the previous 6 games of the young season. Athens weren't bad only Chip Saunders failed to get on base, it's just they had no answer to Cordona in a 8-3 defeat.

Gomez As Career Day On Debut

Called up the day before to try give the bench some pop you'd have excused the Centaurs if they'd have let Gomez settle in, not on your life the motto of the Centaurs may be "if your on the roster you'd better get ready to work". Well Gomez worked his socks off, 4 hits of 4 at bats and throw in 3 rbi's, in not only a game winning performance but also a player of the week performance. If he keeps this up he may never see the bench.

Sarge Takes Charge

He was brought in to be a leader, what else was he signed for with a nickname like Sarge. Athens had a winning record but Sarge knew he hadn't been a leader, he needed to take charge he was bottom of the line up, leaders don't lead from the rear. Today he took charge in a 11-9 win over Beirut, 3 RBI, 1 run of 2 hits and his first home run of the season, Chip Saunders had not only earned his nickname but also the moniker of leader as well.

This is a hell of a writeup! I love the nuns picture holding up the W.

So, are you referring to potential 2042 Burt League All-Star Maxim Makin?

Much appreciated John, most W pics have Cubs logos somewhere wasn't keen on those.

Lost me a bit on the Makin thing, I'm tired I've been up since 4:30am it's midnight and shoeless will be waking me up in around 4 hours :D did I post a wrong link or something, I should have posted in the morning. I proof read it but it was a dodgy sleepy proof read ;)

You better look at the All-Star ballot for the Burt! Makin is on there!

Sorry I was on auto pilot by then, I was looking at a reply in your All Star thread, the Rabisca post i posted the last line made no sense :D think i mentioned the word out 3 times in one sentence

I think Makins more solid than All Star but saying that I'm not 100% certain were he stands stat wise within the UMEBA & Bancroft.

Finally the benefit of writing about the league is bearing fruit, where I can recognize a guy that I wrote about, in this case, who unfortunately plays for Athens (chortle). Guess I should keep writing!

This is just me personally but I can read the stat sheets all day, 5 minutes later I've forgot the player. Now if I write about him or read about him, I'll go to his stat sheet and remember him because theres a face and story to him.
