Centaur of Attention - 2048.5 - June Recap

Post by jeheinz72 » Sun Oct 03, 2021 11:58 pm

June is in the books and the Centaurs surprise once again with a solid month, going 17-9. The big highlight was a 6 game winning streak within a 2-week road trip where the team went 9-3. This month road games weren't the issue, winning 12 of 15. Inconsistent starting pitching really kept the squad from putting it all together as their 5.39 ERA for the month placed 8th in the UMEBA.

What went right: Per usual, the offense. Bancroft best 39 HR was a big factor, leading to a solid .794 OPS. The big contributor was 1B Vinnie Youngberry who hit .378 with 6 HR and 18 RBIs in June. The bullpen as a group also got the job done, ranking 3rd in UMEBA with a 3.64 ERA and 2nd with a .711 OOPS. Shigekazu Kikuchi was lights out, sporting a 0.69 ERA and saving 5 games, striking out 15 in 13 innings of work. Shing Ren went 4-1 in 6 starts with a 3.05 ERA on the month.

What went wrong: The rest of the pitching. Closer Fernando Rangel had an ERA over 11, allowing 14 runs in 11.1 innings. Euan Ring went 2-2, but his ERA was 6.49. Manny Macias was worse at an 8.71 ERA in 4 starts (6 total games). While Youngberry was amazing, the other two 1Bs on the roster both struggled. Yunosuke Terada hit just .190, though his 12 walks did lead to him scoring 9 runs. Andy Seekins still can't get on track, hitting .209 in his 49 PA with just 1 HR.

Down on the farm: Top prospect SP Mick Joo continues to excel, 2.64 ERA in 6 outings in AA. He's 8-5 in 17 starts on the season.

The Road Ahead: A key part of the road ahead is 3B/DH Sosa Seki returning. He was on a torrid run before going down and his bat lengthens an already dangerous lineup. A second big factor is the signing of SP Ken Walter over from BBA. Walter struggled in 8 outings with Long Beach but last year in the BBA went a solid 10-7 with a league average ERA. If he can bring that kind of performance to the UMEBA, he's a big upgrade from Macias.

July brings the All-Star game and there should be some solid representation from the 1st place Centaurs. Once that ends the team embarks on a 2-week, 13-game road trip, but they do get both last place squads on it. Once that road trip completes, just 38% of the teams final 60 games will be away from Athens.

Starting Pitcher of the Month: Shing Ren - 4-1, 3.05 ERA, 26 K's, 9 BB in 38 IP
Reliever of the Month: Shigekazu Kikuchi - 1-0, 5 Sv, 0.69 ERA, 15 K's in 13 IP
Batter of the Month: Vinnie Youngberry, 1B - 378, 7 2B, 6 HR, 18 RBIs, 23 R, 1.123 OPS

Yeah, good format.
I won't steal it though.
It doesn't have an "expansion sucks" section.
