Morning Wood - 59.05 - Conley Makes More History, Claims Top Hitter

Lumberjacks outfielder Alvin Conley made more team history this week when he claimed the team's honor for the Top Hitter from the 2058 season. The reason this is historic is because he becomes the first offensive player to double dip as both the team's top rookie as well as the team's top hitter.

As mentioned in our rookie award, Conley dominated the team leaderboard in most offensive categories in 2058. He led the team in all three triple crown categories by hitting .299-39-103 while also leading the offense with a 2.8 WAR. He also led the team with 191 total base hits as well as an OPS of .871 and 344 total bases. The only player to have an OPS higher than Conley's was Damek Korbel who did so in only 42 games played this season.

While Conley is the first offensive player to win both the top rookie honor as well as the team's top hitter award, he is not the first player to capture two team awards in the same season. Three previous players in Portland history claimed the team's top rookie award as well as the team's top starting pitcher. In a three year run, Steve Warren, Ken Sparks, and Felix Vidaca claimed both the rookie and starting pitcher awards. This occurred in 2046, 2047, and 2048 (oh how we miss those good pitching days in Portland).

Conley's win as the team's top hitter marks the longest stretch in team history without a repeat winner. Alvin becomes the 7th different player to win the award over each of the last 7 seasons. The longest streak was 6 from 2041 to 2046. Ernest McBride was the last repeat winner of the team's top hitter award (oh how we miss those good pitching teams and Ernest McBride belting homers all over the park in Portland).
