Kate Fiscus sat there quietly with her lawyer. The judge had looked over all the documentation, already gotten reports from the officers on duty as well as Kate herself. Kate knew there wasn't much reason to really fight the issue. She was clearly guilty which is why she and her lawyer both agreed to plead guilty to the charges in hopes of the judge being lenient in his decision. The cell phone footage of the night alone was enough to send her packing to jail for months, if not years, on end. But Kate and her lawyer hoped. Hoped the judge would go easy on her.
"Miss Fiscus" the judge spoke as Kate and her lawyer both stood. "The behaviors you demonstrated on the night in question are frankly disgusting and disturbing. How a professional woman of your stature could stoop so low and do these abhorrent things defies logic. The items on the night in question are alarming alone. But some of the testimony from some of our other witnesses here today speak loud volumes to your very character. Comments from Frank Bauer and Heidi Hickman about some of your past discretions have me questioning whether you should be thrown in prison or at the very least be assigned to a mental institution."
Kate didn't budge. She stood there, like a statue. Just taking it all in. Many would have probably lowered their head like a beaten dog. But not Kate. She was still too proud. Her lawyer did take a half step away from Kate during the verbal barrage from the Judge, perhaps trying to do his part to separate himself from whatever verdict was about to land on his client. Maybe, he thought, if he could just slide out of frame from his client no one would tie him to representing Kate in the end.
"But" the judge continued, "I don't think those punishments would work on you. No. I think something a little more out of the norm is in order for you. You stated in your verdict you were truly sorry for your actions. That you could change. That the things you'd done would never happen again. Well Miss Fiscus, I like to believe people at their word. And I like to challenge people to keep their word."
Kate's lawyer slid back closer to his client. Kate stood stoic.
"That's why I'm just sentencing you to 10,000 hours of community service and 2 years of probation for these heinous acts" the judge stated. "Get your act together Miss Fiscus. I better not see you in my court room again. Fortunately for you someone has already agreed for you to serve your community service with him. And considering he was the individual who paid your bail, you must have someone who truly cares about your future Miss Fiscus. I expect you to thank this man for keeping you out of jail."
The judge pounded the gavel. "To the gentleman responsibe for Miss Fiscus, I expect weekly reports on her status."
"Thank you your honor" the voice stated from the back of the courtroom. The stoic look on Kate's face suddenly turned to disbelief. Shock. Even fear. She recognized the voice but didn't have the heart to turn around to confirm. She heard footsteps coming from behind her in the courtroom. Her lawyer reached out and shook the hand that Kate saw outstretched from her peripheral vision.
"You can file those reports through me if you wish and I'll relay them to the judge" Kate's lawyer told the figure to Kate's left.
"That's ok, I'll take care of those."
Kate couldn't look. She was frozen. But slowly, she turned to face the figure and what she saw confirmed what her fears had suggested.
"Welcome back to Portland, Kate" Chris Wilson stated. "I talked to the judge last week and good news. You got your old job back. You can work off those hours and probation as the assistant general manager of the Portland Lumberjacks! The league is all too excited to have you back working with us."
For the first time, Kate's stoic look turned to that of a beaten dog. Her shoulders slumped. Her head dropped. Wilson took her by the arm and began escorting Kate out of the courtroom. Kate was speechless but did manage a phrase from under her breath...
"Fuck Wilson. Fuck Shoeless."
