Holy hell! We only had two rookies last year and they had a -1.0 WAR and a -0.6 WAR respectively. One was a Rule 5 pick-up. The other a scout find from 2047 who missed a month this season with a calf injury. It's slim pick'ns in Portland for this award but I guess someone has to win it.
Umayr Suhayl, not only can I not pronounce your name but I also shouldn't be giving you this award. But I am.
Suhayl went 1-2 on the season with 2 saves in 35 games of relief this season. Over 65.1 innings pitched, he posted a 4.68 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 62 strikeouts. I guess on paper, those numbers don't seem extremely terrible. I guess the 26 walks and 15 homeruns allowed contributed to the -0.6 WAR on the season, the 2nd worst on the pitching staff by the way.
The other fella up for the honors was Zenobious Kazantziakas. And we have a rule that states a guy with 3 Zs and 2 Ks in his name can't win an award. Though his name does sort of roll of the tongue, doesn't it. Zenobious Kazantziakas. I can hear it ringing over the public address speaker now. He only had a .605 OPS in 246 at-bats, so unlikely his name will be said over many PAs in big league parks this season.
