Hold My Log - 54.01 - Vega Claims Top Rookie and Reliever Award
The 2053 season ended in an awful collapse by Portland after the All-Star break that saw the team fail to make the post-season. It was the first time the team failed to make the post-season after 4 consecutive trips to the year end event. But even though the team failed to make it and snapped that streak, the streak of handing out year end awards lives on. Today, the Lumberjacks announced their top rookie from the 2053 season and that was relief pitcher Orlando Vega.
Vega, a former supplemental round draft pick in 2052, shocked a lot within the Portland organization with his performance last season. Appearing in 73 games a year ago, all as a reliever, Vega posted an 11-7 record with 8 saves. The 11 wins were the 3rd most on the staff behind only starting pitchers Chris Thompson and Steve Warren. Over 101 innings pitched, Vega posted a 3.21 ERA and 1.24 WHIP while compiling a 2.1 WAR.
"Vega had a phenominal season last year" said General Manager Chris Wilson. "We are looking forward to him being a crucial piece to our bullpen for many years to come."
Despite the great season and winning the team's top rookie award, Vega finished 3rd in the Frick League's final voting for the Gillstrom Award given to the league's top rookie. He lost out to the inferior Josh Clark of Madison and Sandro Rodriguez of Louisville. Vega finished in 6th in the final Egan Award voting for the Frick League's top Relief Pitcher in 2053. Again, we're fairly certain some inferior guys finished ahead of Vega in the voting (especially graded by WAR since all 5 guys ahead of Vega in the final vote had a lower WAR).

Don't see a lot of guys get the call straight from A ball but this one worked out. Nice job identifying the undervalued relief talent in the draft.

Or Chris trying to meet his quota early so I don't get kicked out of the league. Granted I nearly stepped away last week but decided to give it one more season to see if this stays fun or turns into a job with work. There were times this past season I just DL'd and exported just to make sure I did.

I feel ya. I sincerely hope you stick around. This place is much better with you around even if you can only export and write the minimum.7teen wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 12:33 pmOr Chris trying to meet his quota early so I don't get kicked out of the league. I don't like being one of those GMs. Nothing against those. But I've always enjoyed the story line aspect and the fun of writing articles. The banter back and forth with GMs. For me, pushing out all the stories was just as fun as the simulation itself. Not having the time and in a lot of cases the desire recently to do it (it's all work related now with the new job) has me questioning if I need to step aside.Dington wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 1:08 pmI feel ya. As crazy as it sounds, when I was a teacher I spent A LOT of time on the forums writing and talking. I had free time during classes. Now as an AP and AD, I don't have anywhere close to the time at work to do league stuff.

For sure. If those are full-time positions now then congrats. Can’t remember if that’s the case. If you don’t envision time freeing up then yeah, your heart isn’t in it.7teen wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 2:30 pmI don't like being one of those GMs. Nothing against those.
