Hold My Log - 53.07 - The Good and The Bad

Post by 7teen » Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:56 am

We've reached and surpassed the 1/3 pole of the season and the Lumberjacks sit right in the middle of the Frick League Wild Card race with a 36-25 record. That is good enough for the FL's top WC spot but still sits a full 6 games back of the Sacramento Mad Popes who own the BBA's best record at this point of the season. Despite major roster turnover the last two seasons, the Lumberjacks continue to make themselves a competitive team and 2053 looks like another season where the team will continue to compete for that elusive Brewster Title.

Let's break down what's worked and not worked thus far this season.

The Good:
The starting rotation has been this team's backbone for a decade now and continues to be the shining point. Four starters all have an ERA under 4.00 and is being led by Chris Thompson who is 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. Felix Vidaca is also having one of his rebound seasons and is 6.2 with a 2.80 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. I had a random thought the other day wanting to research the most wins by a starting pitching unit for their career. This group of 5-6 guys (when you add in Warren, Sparks, Gomez, and Marable) have now been a unit for 6 consecutive seasons and have to be doing some great things in the terms of league history. Warren is the veteran now having been with us for 8, but they've all been together for 6 straight seasons. Collectively they've won 377 games for the Portland Lumberjacks.

The Bad:
On the flip side, the bullpen has been atrocious. Our gambles on Keiki Reini and starter converted to reliever Juan Garcia have not paid off. Marable has struggled early so we've put him in the pen. All 3 currently sport an ERA over 6.00 causing Portland to have the 14th rated bullpen in the league at the moment.

The Good:
Carlomaria Donadoni continues to produce well in our offense, allowing fans to forget the name Ernest McBride. After a 50 homerun 2052 season, Donadoni has hit 13 at this point and is second on the team with a 1.3 WAR. In the most recent sim, Donadoni hit his 400th career homerun. He'll soon jump into the top 100 on the career all-time homeruns list.

The Bad:
After being the punch line of several injury jokes, Rex Foster has returned for most of the season but is yet to produce. He has just 2 homeruns and 15 RBI in 32 games played this season. HIs stat line is still solid (.336/.364/.478) and his bat is still needed in the lineup. He does have 10 hits over his last 5, but the offense needs him to produce more HR and RBI. And obviously stay healthy.

The Good:
Ron Shiplack has been a nice free agent addition to the team. He currently leads the team with a 1.6 WAR.

The Best:
Portland currently has 2 farm teams leading their divisions. Utilizing free agent depth and ample money to spend on signing bonuses, Portland has signed up several fringe free agents to boost it's farm teams chances of winning a post-season trophy. The Quincy Fire Dancers (AAA) currently have a 35-29 record and lead their division by 2.5 games. The Wise Heaters (A) however currently own an impressive 48-16 record thanks to a whopping 26-3 May record. All signs are pointing to another showdown with Toledo to see which team will represent the Baxter League for the single A title in 2053.
