Hold My Log - 53.05 - French Collected 3,000th Hit
Let me preface this entire team news by stating how sad it is to see how much Dennis French has fallen off in the last few seasons. At age 35, he's on the cusp of being a waiver wire or released player casualty and I really don't want to do that. He's not in Boise anymore, that's for sure.
But let's now spin this with some happier thoughts. I completely missed a major milestone accomplished by Dennis last season. One that should have generated a team news or two a season ago from me but I just couldn't find the time. And that is the fact that Dennis French collected his 3,000th career hit on August 28. In doing so, he becomes the 24th player in Brewster Baseball history to reach the milestone. He finished the season at 3,026 hits which has already propelled him to 21st on the all-time hits list. And despite his physical decline, he is still active and will only look to climb higher on the leaderboard. He's 35 years old.
"I guess I've been playing for a long time" said the future first ballot hall of famer when he recorded the hit last season. "I know my age is catching up to me and I'm not quite as talented as I once was. But I think there is still some gas in the tank. Some charge in the battery. I don't think I'm anywhere close to being done just yet."
French finished last season with a .268/.296/.430 slash line with 17 homeruns, 82 RBI, and 155 base hits. It was the first time in his career he failed to post an on-base percentage of over .300.
With his 31st hit this season, French will surpass Juan Karyabwhite and jump into the top 20. He trails Steve Collins III by 27 hits but Collins is still active and likely only a faster trajectory to get hits. He needs 319 more base hits to possibly jump into the top 10. While his ability is still trailing off, 3 more mediocre seasons would certainly put French on pace to do that.

Glad I got a couple of good seasons out of him, thought they weren’t all great as he had just begun his decline.

If he can someone get a 1-2 WAR this year it won't be completely lost. If he doesn't opt-out at the end of the season, I'll likely swallow the $7 million Id have to pay him over the last years and release him. He'd be owed $5 next season and then a $2 million buyout instead of that final team option year.
I'm in a similar boat with the declining Ronnie Hubbard. Something about playing for Nashville must suck the talent out of you early on! haha

French can still provide solid defense on the outfield corners. He may have a couple years close to 2 WAR left in him.

The thing is, though a little pricey, if you are a WAR enthusiast, paying 4 million per WAR is not great but not horrible. A lot depends on how fast he declines.
And apparently 3000 hits isn't a HOF guarantee around here...

It gets my vote.
But when you tie in his 80.9 WAR, he's a sure fire HOF.
