Hold My Log - 53.03 - Top Pitcher Honors Go to.....

Post by 7teen » Sun Nov 20, 2022 8:00 am

It wasn't a big secret back in the day, but the Master PlanTM that the Lumberjacks instituted to build up a solid stable of pitchers has paid off in recent years as the team has made it to the post-season largely on the shoulders of a deep rotation. While the organization has seemingly lost a true "ace" of the staff, having a stable of 5-7 guys who could all be #2 or #3 starters has allowed the team to win enough games to enjoy trips to the post-season and even some post-season success.

Last season, two of the stable of arms stood out above the rest with one of them in the end taking top pitchers honors. VKen Sparks finished the 2052 season with a team best 17 wins, going 17-10 in his 33 starts. In 197.2 innings, he posted a 3.05 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, struck out 127 batters while posting a 3.2 WAR. Despite an overall impressive season, the WAR was his lowest of his 6 year career.

Steve Warren, the "veteran" of this staff at 28 years of age, made 29 starts and finished the season with an 11-5 overall record. In 140.1 innings, he posted a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, struck out 121 batters, but finished the season with a slightly higher WAR than Sparks at 3.5 despite significantly less time on the mound. Early in the season, Warren also became the first Portland pitcher to record his 1,000th strikeout in franchise history.

Despite Warren leading the team in pitching WAR, we have to give it to Sparks in the end. His 17 wins and ERA were significantly better than Warren's, not to mention the fact he logged more time on the mound overall this season than Warren. Both were vying for their 3rd top pitcher award and Sparks will get their first.

Sparks has now been named the team's top pitcher in 2047, 2049, and 2052. Warren was the team's recipient in 2046 and last season, 2051.
