Hold My Log - 52.09 - Brew the Coffee Rex!

Post by 7teen » Sat Nov 05, 2022 8:55 am

Rex Foster sat in the corner of the clubhouse, leg propped up on a spare chair as he scrolled through his phone. The team celebrated all around him. General Manager Chris Wilson walked in "brew some damn coffee Rex! Make your fucking self useful for crying out loud! We're going to the post-season!" Foster looked up briefly, shrugged, and went back to scrolling his phone. But yes, thanks to an improbable finish to the 205 (has to check notes to make sure what season it is)2 season, the Lumberjacks are headed to their 4th consecutive post-season.

It wasn't easy. In fact, at times it appeared almost hopeless for Portland. After a 3-0 mid-September loss to Sacramento, the Lumberjacks record sat at 61-66, the worst this late in the season since the team began making post-season runs. The team sat in 6th place in the Pacific Division and all seemed lost. But then, weird things happened. The team closed August with a 9 game winning streak and then carried that into a 15-11 September and suddenly Portland saw itself tied with the darlings of the league Des Moines Kernels for the final wild card spot. The tie forced a 163 game of the season.

During this run, Portland hasn't been shy of playing an extra game. In 2049, the team's first ever trip to the playoffs, Portland had to defeat the Louisville Sluggers to advance to the post-season. Portland won that game and eventually advanced to the Landis Series where they eventually lost to Las Vegas. Last season, Portland played a 163 game against Sacramento to decide the Pacific Champion. Portland lost that game but advanced as a wild card. Again, Portland would lose in the Landis Series to New Orleans. (Sense a trend here? :coffee:

This year's do or die game was held in Portland and was one for the ages. Portland jumped out to early leads, going up 1-0 after 2 and 3-1 after 4. But each time, Des Moines managed to knot it back up. Both teams had chances. They tallied 33 hits combined in the game but after 9 innings the two clubs were tied at 3-3. Des Moines got their first 2 on in the 10th but failed to score. Portland got a 2 out double in the 11th, but failed to score. Des Moines got a leadoff single in the 12th, but again, failed to score. In the bottom of the 12th, it happened.

Jiao-long Ma led off with a double for Portland. After an IBB to Donadoni, Sheffer struck out. That brought up William Drew.

Quick back story on William Drew, he finished the season with a -0.4 WAR. He wasn't even on the team at the start of the season. In fact, we only signed him as a minor league player to boost our minor league teams. Well, injuries and cap issues later forced Drew into action in Portland (does this story sound familiar? Just look at last year!) On a 1-2 count, Drew lined a single between first and second base. Ma raced around 3rd, slid into home, and scored. The capacity crowd at the Trail in Multnomah went nuts as the team clinched yet another post-season spot.

"This year was something different" commented AGM Kate Fiscus after the game. "We had a lot of roster turnover from last season. Hell, Ma is he only guy back from last year's offense if that tells you anything. We lost a lot of guys. Many felt this team was dead in the off-season with McBride left. Then when Foster got hurt earlier in the year, people left us for dead. But this bunch just kept grinding. We knew we had some good pieces. Yes, new faces but good pieces. This one feels extra special."

The team will now take on the Twin Cities River Monsters in the Geoghegan Series this week in the best of 5.

"Hey Rex, get the coffee brewing damn it!"
