Hold My Log - 52.08 - More Signings as Spring Approaches

Post by 7teen » Thu Sep 01, 2022 7:44 pm

The Lumberjacks front office continues to make a flurry of moves in an effort to build another roster that can compete for the Landis in 2052. After a trio of signings that included Ronnie Hubbard, Andrew Gallagher, and Dennis French over the last few weeks, the team made another trio of signings this week as spring training approaches.

The biggest signing of the 3 was Rex Foster. Foster, the former Nine and Mad Popes slugger, signed a 6 year deal worth $62 million. The first two are guaranteed with Foster owning an opt-out clause for the next 2 and the final two years being a player and team option. Foster played in just 69 games last season with the Mad Popes before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the season. He hit 16 homeruns and drove in 59 RBI before the injury.

"Fans won't like it, but we think Foster is the replacement to McBride" commented GM Chris Wilson. "No, his numbers don't quite match up with what Ernest had provided but if we platoon Foster and Gallagher together at DH, I think we can get a very good DH combination for a fraction of the cost McBride would have been to us in 2052. We just need him to stay healthy!"

The next two signings aren't as high profile as the Foster, French, and Hubbard signings but will play key roles to the team. Wllibald Akbulut signed a $2.5 million deal for 2052 with a team option for $5 million next season to play 3B for the Lumberjacks. Akbulut produced a 1.3 WAR in just 55 games last season for Las Vegas and has been a consistent 2 WAR player for the last few years of his career, mostly with Charm City and El Paso. Finally, the team added catcher Rainer Scheffer to a 1 year deal worth $2.2 million.

"We're excited about both of these moves" added Wilson. "Akbulut has been a solid 3B for several seasons and we feel his output exceeds the price tag we paid for him. We know he played for very little last season and has earned a better pay day this year. As for Scheffer, he's too good a catcher to let someone else have him for that cheap. Health and work ethic are major red flags on Scheffer but he adds some depth to our catching situation. So Huynh earned the spot with his play last season and will be our regular guy, but we feel Scheffer is a super veteran addition who can spell So 2-3 days a week without us losing much on offense or defense."

Overall the 2052 Lumberjacks club is rounding into shape. The team still has around $20 million in cap space and has indicated it will use the rest of the cap space to find a middle of the lineup 1B (McBride perhaps?) and some key platoon and bench guys as well as a bullpen arm or two. Portland, despite the money spent, still ranks 27th in the BBA in salaries heading into spring training.
