Hold My Log - 52.06 - Gallagher Signing Has Fans Worried

Post by 7teen » Fri Aug 26, 2022 10:29 am

Portland made another minor signing this week and it brings back a familiar face. Andrew Gallagher signed a 1 year, $2 million deal to return back to Portland. Gallagher, a key figure of the Robert Menzies trade with Charlotte back in 2045, spent 5 seasons with the team before spending a year in Nashville. He took last year off due to contractual disagreements.

While fans may be excited to have a familiar face back in a Portland uniform, one that hit 133 homeruns during his first stint that ranks 2nd on the franchise's all-time list, some see the move as a sign that the club has little intentions of bringing back the heart and soul of the team the last few years in Ernest McBride. Many around the league feel Gallagher is a DH only, a spot that has been held the last few seasons by McBride.

"It doesn't mean anything other than we're trying to fill a roster at the moment" commented team assistant GM Kate Fiscus. "We need bodies to fill the 27-man roster. Not all the guys can be flashy, high priced guys. We have to find some guys willing to sign for some lower level deals that we feel can help the team. Gallagher was a guy willing to do that so we snatched him up. Fans are quick to forget that Gallagher and McBride both played together in Portland before. Andrew played the field. The two can be on the roster."

Fans were quick to criticize Fiscus' story as it contradicts the recent plan of signing Hubbard for CF and building a solid defense again behind the pitching. Last year's firstbaseman, Manny Aguilar, Jr was a very serviceable glove man at the position, something Gallagher is not. Despite Fiscus' statements, many see Gallagher as the front-runner for the DH spot, if not full time, then at least in a platoon role. A spot he would not be considered for if the team had any intentions of re-signing McBride this off-season.
