Hold My Log - 51.21 - Portland Advances in 5 over Sluggers

Post by 7teen » Fri Aug 05, 2022 11:23 am

It's never easy! After a disappointing finish to the season that saw Portland drop a tie-breaking game 163 against Sacramento for the Pacific Division, Portland hosted the Louisville Sluggers in the best of 5 Geoghegan Series this week that saw the Lumberjacks narrowly advance in the series by taking the deciding game 5. Both teams held serve, winning each of their respective home games.

Here are the key highlights from the games.

Game 1: Portland wins 11-3; takes 1-0 lead
Trailing 1-0 in the 6th, Portland's offense unleashed a fury of runs, scoring 6 in the 6th and 4 more in the 7th for an "easy" 11-3 victory. Ernest McBride was 2-3 with a 3-run homerun in the 7th. Jiao-long Ma homered in the 7th. The duo combined to score 5 runs and drive in 5 RBI. Steve Warren allowed 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5 over 6.1 innings pitched for the win.

Game 2: Portland win 5-3; takes 2-0 lead
Portland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but would watch as Louisville would tie it up heading to the bottom of the 6th. Francisco Otero hit a solo homerun in the bottom half of the inning to break the tie and Ma added his 2nd homer of the series the next inning to provide the final margin of 5-3. Ken Sparks was solid, giving up the 3 runs over 7 innings. He allowed just 3 hits and a pair of walks. Both hits were homeruns to Ricardo Yanez.

Game 3: Portland loses 11-2; maintains 2-1 lead
McBride had a 2-RBI double in the 6th inning. Louisville already led 5-0 at that point. Just when the Lumberjacks fans thought a comeback was in order, the typically reliable Lorenzo de' Medici coughed up 6 runs in the 8th and that was that.

Game 4: Portland loses 12-11; Series tied at 2-2
Every series typically has that one game that defines it and game 4 was it. Portland scored 3 in the 1st with Ma hitting his 3rd homer of the series. Louisville responded with a pair of their own. Angel Zalapa hit a solo homer in the 2nd and added a GRAND SLAM in the 3rd and Portland appeared ready to clinch. They led 9-4 after 3 innings. It was extended to 11-4 after the top of the 5th when McBride doubled in 2 more. But Portland starter Felix Vidaca couldn't hold the Sluggers offense down. Louisvlle scored 5 in the bottom half and suddenly it was an 11-9 ballgame after 5. Oddly enought, it stayed there until the 9th. Up by 2, Portland turned to Xuan Ngo, the stopper who typically gets a bulk of the end of game save situations. Ngo was called on to pitch the 7th and 8th, which he did so in clean fashion. But with de' Medici's blow up the day before, it was Ngo's game to finish on this night. Rarely this season had Ngo thrown more than 2 innings at a time, but the team bullpen leader in innings pitched this season with 110.1 felt he was up to the challenge. He was not. After getting Yanez to fly out, Luis Mendoza homered to make it a 1-run game. A walk to Moore was followed by a 2-run homer by Kwakou that sent the Louisville faithful into a frenzy as the walk-off blast ensured there would be a deciding game 5 two nights later in the PNW......

Game 5: Portland wins 6-3; Wins Series 3-2
Nervous tension was all around and was only heightened when the Sluggers struck for a run off Warren in the top of the 1st. Zalapa responded for Portland with a solo shot in the bottom half, his 3rd of the series, and we were back tied at 1-1. In the bottom of the 2nd, So Huynh doubled in a pair while the team tacked on a 3rd run and Portland led 4-1. Warren retired the Sluggers scoreless for the next 4 innings but was tagged with a pair in the 6th and suddenly it was a 4-3 game. de' Medici rebounded from his game 3 skid and pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th innings, walking just a batter. He'd retire a guy in the 9th as well. But earlier, So Huynh continued a storybook game 5 by hitting a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the 8th to give the Lumberjacks a 6-3 lead. Fearing a Ngo blow up in the 9th, manager Grux King followed de' Medici with Martinez to get out Moore, and then allowed Ngo to get the final out to record the final out. Warren picked up his 2nd win of the series.

In the end, Francisco Otero was named Geoghegan Series MVP thanks to 10 hits and a .526 average in the series helped by a .550 OBP. McBride led the way with 8 RBI for the team while Zalapa and Ma each hit 3 homeruns. Warren picked up 2 of the 3 wins in his starts. The team now plays Nashville in the Doubleday Series.

If McBride shows up it could be a really close series.

After the year he had, I expect him to opt-out of his deal with me after the season.
