Hold My Log - 51.15 - Fall from Grace

Post by 7teen » Wed Jul 13, 2022 9:12 am

While the Portland Lumberjacks sit atop the Frick League's Pacific standings and currently possess the league's number 1 run scoring offense, it has not come at the aid of 2B Roberto Viramontas. Viramontas has been in a season long funk that sees the former diamond glove second baseman batting just .172/.274/.234 on the season with a lone homerun and 8 RBI. Production far below his normal output.

"We're not sure what the deal is with V at the moment" said first year Portland manager Grux King. "He started out cold so we dropped him down in the lineup thinking that may get him jump started. It has not. We are firm believers that guys perform to the back of their baseball cards over the long haul. But the long haul is starting to run short at this point. Optimistically it means Roberto is going to have a monster final 2 months of the season. Realistically, he may not shake out of it this season."

Roberto Viramontas entered this season in the 2nd year of a 5 year contract with Portland. He hit just .241 last season but produced a .709 OPS and stole a career high 67 bases. Add on top of that a good glove at his position and he totaled a 4.3 WAR. The WAR matched a career high he had set back in 2047 with Charlotte. Between then, he had posted WAR figures of 3.7 and 3.7. He had never posted below a 1.6 WAR in any season of his career, making his current -1.0 WAR all the more puzzling.

"I've tried almost everything at this point" commented a frustrated Viramontas after his 0-4 night against Hawaii last week. "I think it's all mental and physical for me now. I'm in a fog that I can't seem to get cleared out."

His Contact and Eye have dropped. On the bright side, his sac bunt is up.
