Hold My Log - 51.7 - de' Medici Claims Tight Bullpen Honor

Post by 7teen » Tue May 24, 2022 11:07 am

Well, it really wasn't "that" tight (that's what she said). But Lorenzo de' Medici claimed the team's top relief pitching honor announced today by General Manager Chris Wilson. de' Medici's 2050 season was so good in fact, that as already reported, he claimed the Frick League's top honor for relief pitcher of the year as well, the Jason Egan Award.

Lorenzo had one of his best seasons of his career in 2050, which is saying quite a bit for a reliever who has had some fine performances over his 14 year career. In 2050, de' Medici pitched in 96 games, compiling 107.1 relief innings. Over that span, he tallied a 6-1 record with 3 saves. Most impressive though was his 1.17 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and 203 strikeouts that led to a 5.1 WAR. The WAR was his 3rd highest of his career. The only seasons he had with a higher WAR also so him throw 60 or more innings in those seasons. His 0.75 WAR matched his lowest of his career, a mark he also reached in 2044. For a pitcher who signed a contract extension in the off-season, it was a welcome return to dominance.

"I heard some of the rumors heading into last season" commented Lorenzo. "Some felt my time in Portland was a little disappointing. Some of my numbers weren't what they used to be. I heard the people saying keeping me around for the extension was a mistake and with great relievers turning into a dime a dozen, paying me was a mistake. I'd definitely say it added a little fuel to the fire for the season."

While de' Medici was the clear winner of the award for the Lumberjacks, he was pushed by a couple of his teammates for most of the season. Matt Alicea had a career year that saw him go 6-1 with 10 saves. Alicea posted career bests in ERA (1.29), WHIP (0.77), and WAR (2.4). Xuan Ngo, the former first round pick of the Lumberjacks, also posted a WAR over 2 and had a career season. Ngo finished with 6 wins and 15 saves. But his 3.09 ERA and 1.10 WHIP were no comparison to de' Medici's, despite the solid and career best 2.0 WAR.

"We are in a good position right now with our bullpen and pitching as a whole" added Wilson while announcing the Award for de' Medici. "It's good to see these guys competing against one another to win these awards. It makes our team better as a whole when guys are not only competing against our opponent, but against one another as well."
