Hold My Log - 49.79 - Dark Clouds Loom

Post by 7teen » Fri Jan 28, 2022 4:50 pm

We've reached the final month of the season. And yes, Portland fans can start that countdown of possible scenarios of how their team can make the post-season. It will take 23 wins by their club or 23 losses by Chicago, or some variation of the two to get the job done. That's the magic number. 23. Granted, that's to clinch of Chicago. There are a host of other Heartland teams (and Hawaii if you want to include them) that could still rain down on Portland's parade. We know they likely will. But with 28 games left on the schedule, that's all that needs to happen. 23. 23 wins or losses and the Lumberjacks are going to the post-season. But there is that one dark cloud that looms on the horizon.

13 straight road games to end the season!

That's right, the schedule makers were not fond of Portland and making it as difficult as possible on the Lumberjacks must have been in their script. Portland will end their 2049 campaign playing 13 straight games away from the Trail in Multnomah. It's been that very fact that GM Chris Wilson continues to circle back to.

"Some call me a pessimist" Wilson commented today when talking his team's post-season chances, "but I like to look at myself as a realist. The real facts of the matter here is we have a magic number of 23 but somehow have to figure out how to reach that end mark and solve this puzzle with so many games on the road to wrap up. I'd feel a lot better about our chances if things were reversed and those games were in Portland obviously."

With 28 games left on the schedule, fans of the Lumberjacks only get a few more chances to see their team play before the year concludes. And those games aren't exactly fan friendly. Portland wraps up a series tonight against Yellow Springs at home and then welcomes those very Black Sox from Chicago to Portland. AFter that, it's a series against Hawaii and Long Beach and that's it for home games. But those 4 versus Chicago loom very large at this juncture of the season.

"They aren't must wins" commented Wilson Alomar, "but they could go a long way in helping us tie a bow on a clinching spot before that dreaded road trip to end the season."

Each win over Chicago this week would know 2 numbers off that magic number. Each loss to the Black Sox, well, the number holds steady.

"For the longest time, we've been telling ourselves we can be a .500 team from here on out and make it" commented manager Farri Agymah. "Sometimes you hate to have that mindset but I think it sticks true. Surely, with the pitching we have, we can manage a .500 record in September. Even with all the road games. Surely. Right?"

A .500 record would have Portland at 89 wins. It would also mean 14 wins. Dropping that magic number to 9. Does Chicago and the other Heartland teams have that many losses in them? Are we just grasping at straws? Is Portland doomed? Are we a cinch to make the post-season anyway. Are we panicking? No, you're panicking. What's going on here!?

Since you currently hold the 4th and final spot, Portland fans are pulling hard for Madison in the final month.

So easy to blow it in the UMEBA, lost the first of two series to Manama and that’s just about it. Seven games out of the wildcard now and with just 20 games left, that’s looking nigh on impossible
