Hold My Log - 49.15 - Personal Anecdote

Post by 7teen » Mon Dec 06, 2021 1:57 pm

So rather than get all detailed about Portland's first sim that saw us go 1-4, how about a more personal story...

I've been a High School coach in some capacity for about 15 of my 18 years of being involved in education. I've coached a variety of levels from varsity, to JV, to MS and even my kids travel sports.

Ive always taught at a Middle School (first 17 years) but this year took a position at the local high school. As a history teacher, you're pretty much required to coach so I decided I'd coach the Middle School basketball team because my son played. Figured if I had to be there to take and get him from practice, I might as well coach. Well, this year I was gifted the most talented group of players I've ever had the pleasure of coaching. We went 15-0 during our regular season, winning our games by an average of 30.2 points a game and never playing a game within 12 points all season. We won one by 49 and two by 40. These games were four 6-minute quarters mind you.

But in a mid-season tournament, we came out a little sluggish against a team we had beaten by 38 to kick off the season. With 30 seconds left in the 1st quarter, I called a timeout. The score read 11-9 us leading. When the team huddled, I bent down in the middle and yelled "WAKE UP!" loud enough that I think the people outside the gym heard me.

Well, that's my message to the Portland Lumberjacks who started 1-4. WAKE UP!

We have 7 different starters (regulars/platoons) hitting under .200 through 5 games. That's not going to cut it!

As for that basketball game, we led 11-9 at that timeout and went on to win 48-19, outscoring the other team 38-10 the rest of the way. Let's hope the Lumberjacks meet my fury with a similar run!

Are you really even telling your team to wake up if you don't add "the Fuck" in the middle? I mean, these kids aren't in elementary school anymore.

Now that I think about it, what does adding "the Fuck" even do. It's not exactly an adjective. Or an adverb. Is it a new form of word only Ron knows?

Help me.

There were times during my younger days of coaching that I was pretty fiery. In fact, as a varsity basketball coach I once picked up 3 technical fouls (2 is the max). I got ejected after the 2nd one, picked up a 3rd post-ejection, and the refs made my team forfeit when I threw my suit coat onto the court. I was going to throw a chair (ala Bobby Knight) but someone was sitting in it. All of this in the matter of the first 1:21 of the game.

I've mellowed out quite a bit since then. But do occassionally get a little fired up when my team doesn't start well (in this case) or an ump/ref just makes a series of bad calls.

Lol I used to officiate youth basketball at our local parks and my officiating partner for one game gave 10 T’s to a coach. I was standing there in shock and being my first year didn’t stop to realize you could only receive two. The other coach just let each one of his players shoot two free throws. I think they made 1 or 2 lol.

I've done a little reffing the last couple of years for extra money. I've done a few travel youth basketball tournaments. And during that time, I've not given out a single technical. I used my experience as a coach, knowing coaches can get pretty fiery, to just do the job as a ref and block them out. I did have one coach get pretty mad over a call I made. I just ignored the guy but the other official couldn't take him yelling at me and T'd him up.

I had a pretty clueless umpire once that should have tossed me. He didn't know a strike from his ass and was calling a terrible game. After one of my guys K'd looking at a ball over his head I went nuts on him and actually kicked dirt. I stood there in shock when he didn't eject me. An inning later, after I just kept saying sarcastic remarks to my team in his direction, he turned to the backstop and asked a parent if he should eject me. The parent said "You can't now! He kicked dirt on you and you didn't then. You can't now!"

Odd part about that story is the guy was so clueless that I've had him several times in baseball and basketball and I've gotten every call. He's been in my back pocket ever since! I tell him before games I have a jar of dirt in my bag, don't make me use it.
