While the Lumberjacks did their part in defeating the Heartland division 5 straight times in the most recent sim to go 5-1 for the week, the rest of its division mates took the previous team news to heart and could not help the Lumberjacks gain much ground in the wild card race. Portland climbed back over the .500 mark at at 59-58 on the season which is good enough for 2nd in the Pacific, but unfortunately that record still sits a 8.5 games out of the 4th and final spot for the post-season with 45 games remaining.
"We took care of the bottom teams this week" commented team GM Chris Wilson, "but it may not be enough at this point. Yes, we have to win the games we should, and we did that this week by beating Des Moines and Twin Cities. But we may need some help from these teams losing and then prove we belong by actually beating some of these teams ourselves."
Despite a 5-1 week, the Lumberjacks were only able to gain 1 game of ground in the wild card race. Chicago, who Portland still has a 3 game series with coming up, has won 6 of its last 8 against Pacific teams. Likewise, Madison is also 6 and 8 including 6 straight over Vancouver and Valencia. Nashville, the team closest to making a push into the race, just ran off 7 wins in 8 games against the Pacific.
Only Omaha and Louisville ran into slight speed bumps against the Pacific this week. Portland plays neither the rest of the season, but Omaha while Louisville managed only 5 wins in 8 games. Omaha however was the biggest loser this week, going 3-5 against the Pacific division. Omaha is clinging to a 3 way tie for that final spot now.
"Our only hope at this point is those teams beat up on each other and we beat up on our own division" said Wilson. "Of course that seems to always be the hope of the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the Pacific and it rarely comes to fruition. Those teams will do just enough in those games to clinch it for the Heartland.
Updating the Prediction
In the last team news, we predicted 88-74 would get into the post-season and Portland had to go 37-20 to reach that mark in its remaining games. Portland must now go 29-16 to reach that mark.
